The Gambler – Part III

Revised Edition – Part Three

This has been one of the hardest series I have ever written.

I have been sitting on these pages for well over a year, unsure if I should share them. More than once, I almost kept them to myself. But with everything happening in our world today, and after much prayer, I believe the time has come.

This is not just another story. It is one of the most personal battles I have ever written about. It takes me back to one of the darkest moments of my life, when everything seemed to hang in the balance. If you missed part One and Two, I invite you to go here and here and read it before continuing. It will help you understand the journey that led to this moment. My prayer is that, if you see yourself anywhere in these words, you will also see the grace of God waiting to meet you.

“Crazy thing is, out of all life done taught me… Before you get one win you gotta take a thousand losses.”
– Rob Wave –

We often hear stories about the struggles, the hard times, and the challenges that come with being a Christian. They are sometimes called the “good trials” because they test our faith and our trust in God. When you are truly defeated and can only depend on Him for the strength to keep going, that is when your faith can be at its strongest. You are trusting that God will help you get through whatever you are facing.

He will be our guide when we do not know which way to go, and He will be our strength when we feel like we cannot continue. Through these trials, we learn to have faith in Him and trust that He knows what is best for us. Even when we cannot understand what is happening or see what is ahead, we can trust God and His plans for our lives.

Psalm 71:20 – Christian Standard Bible
You caused me to experience many troubles and misfortunes, but you will receive me again.

If you are not in a relationship with God, you may feel overwhelmed by the trials and struggles of life. You may feel broken, torn apart, and lost in this world. Without the hope and security that comes from having a relationship with our Heavenly Father, life’s challenges can seem like they are too much to bear.

You may feel like you cannot keep up with everything happening around you. You may feel tired, discouraged, and unsure of how you will make it through another day. At times, it may seem like the trials will never end and that there is no way out of what you are facing.

“Without God, you cannot overcome the temptations of evil,
the struggles of life, and the hardships.”

The truth is, I didn’t feel like I needed any more anxiety, fear, panic attacks, trials, or hardships in my life at that time. Satan seemed to have the upper hand because he already had so much of what I enjoyed. He was offering me the things I was not ready to give up, and he wasn’t making my life any harder. So, I could have simply continued going about my daily life as usual, just as I had been doing all along, acting as though nothing had ever changed.

But wait. That was exactly why I became The Gambler and put my life on the line. I needed a change. I wanted a change. This “normal life” was no longer an option for me. I was willing to sacrifice myself to either God or Satan because I wanted to escape the life I was living and bring it to an end.

I was being destroyed by a life of drinking, lying, stealing, looking at things I knew were wrong, cheating, being obsessed with girls, idolatry, and depression. These were the things I had convinced myself I needed. They were the things I thought I could not live without. But instead of making my life better, they only brought me more problems, more pain, and more hurtful relationships with the people around me.

Something had to stop. The cycle of despair and the pain I was living through had to come to an end, or it was going to end me. I knew it was time to make a change. I knew I had to take a risk if I was ever going to break free from the life I had become so used to living.

That is why I am here. That is why I became a pawn.

Is pawn even a card term? Probably not. But it sounds good, so we are going to go with it and keep it for now.

It was a risky move, but it was a risk I was willing to take. I knew in my heart that I had to do something drastic if I wanted my life to change. I could not keep doing the same things and expect a different outcome. Something had to change, and that change had to begin with me.

That is why I am here today.

Psalm 107:4 – Amplified Bible
They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region, and did not find a way to an inhabited city.

As God gathered His people, some came from the wilderness, but He guided them towards the Promised Land.

After God has already delivered us, why do we still fall back into the old ways, time after time, knowing they lead to destruction?

Join me in Part Four as we go deeper into the story of The Gambler.

I agree with your statement, “He will be our guide when we are lost and confused, and He will be our strength when we feel overwhelmed and unable to continue.” God is truly remarkable for guiding us towards the right path. I admire your openness in sharing this aspect of your life. I understand that it may not be an easy journey, but God has chosen you to be a beacon of guidance for others.

A powerful and deeply honest reflection. What struck me most is the question of why we return to the very things from which God has already delivered us. Sometimes the hardest part of faith is not being rescued, but choosing not to return to the old life. Your “Gambler” metaphor beautifully captures the courage it takes to risk transformation and trust God with what lies ahead.

You expressed something I wrestled with deeply. Sometimes God delivers us from something, yet the pull of the old life can still be there. Choosing to leave it behind and trust Him with what comes next takes Faith.

I’m Grateful that the Gambler metaphor connected with you. All Glory and Praise belong to God. 🙏🏼

Why do we return? The answer may be different for each person. Part of it seems to be a learning experience. Since we are different, we can go back and handle our weaknesses differently, or so we mistakenly think. The secret is getting out quicker each time and soon even the temptation isn’t tempting anymore … all by God’s grace.

    God bless you and yours.

So true, sin has a way of enticing us but then leads us to destruction. Certain sins can be a stronghold. Reminds me of Romans 7:15, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” But like you mentioned, we can’t keep doing the same thing and expect a different outcome. We have to really pray and trust God to renew our minds and hearts.

Romans 7:15 is such a powerful picture of the struggle we can have with sin. We can know what is right and still find ourselves doing what we hate.

You’re so right that we can’t keep doing the same things and expect a different outcome. We need to bring those struggles to God, trust Him, and allow Him to renew our hearts and minds.

Willie I have been enjoying reading this series of the gambler and in parts of your writing I can see myself. When life becomes so difficult and overwhelming I know that I slip back to my old ways of not trusting the Lord as I should because of the noise in our world, I begin to wonder what has changed did God forsake me his child my answer is that God has never changed it was me moving myself from my Savior and then I remember to go back to the beginning of my faith journey which is scripture reading and my prayer life .

I think many of us can see ourselves in that struggle. When life gets loud and overwhelming, it can be easy to forget that God has not moved. We are the ones who sometimes drift away.

I love what you said about going back to the beginning through Scripture and prayer. That is where we are reminded of who God is and who we are in Him.

still along for the journey. The Last question I always answer with the proverb… As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.

Thank you so much Brother and Thank you for Reading and Commenting. I love the way you connected that proverb to the question of why we keep returning to the things we know can hurt us. Sometimes we repeat the same mistakes until God opens our eyes and shows us a better way.

And I really like your thought about being pawns. Maybe the real question is not whether we are pawns, but whose hand we are willing to trust. 🙏 When we place our lives in God’s hands, He can take what seems like a risky move and use it for His purpose.

Something about placing your trust in God feels like a gamble, especially when you first give him the opportunity.

Amen 🙏🤗 I love the way you put that. In many ways, the greatest gamble really was choosing to place my life in God’s hands instead of continuing to bet on the things that were destroying me.

Looking back, I can see that what felt like the biggest risk became the greatest decision of my life.

All Glory and Praise belong to God for what He has done and continues to do. 🙏

Thank you so much for Reading and Commenting … I hope you’ll keep following The Gambler, and I pray the journey continues to Bless and encourage you.

I don’t know how I missed this, but I’ve gotten WAY behind on email. Anyway, this was superb. You’re correct–we all sacrifice ourselves to right or wrong, God or Satan. Risk is what we take with every decision we make; we do, however, often default to what we’re used to, what we’re comfortable with. Your Gambler seeks to do the right thing even though the wrong thing is easier and more satisfying in the moment. Really well written, my friend.

You said it better than i could have. We often return to what is familiar and comfortable, even when we know it isn’t good for us. Choosing what is right can be harder, but God gives us the strength to make those choices and keep moving toward Him. Amen 🙏🏼

Your courage in laying bare your soul and transforming scars into light is invaluable. It takes profound sensitivity to recognize when one has strayed from the path and to turn the desert itself into a turning point; there is a serene beauty in the surrender that is born of vulnerability.

    Hi Willie,

Your series becomes more interesting with each post. It is obvious you are leading up to a big and impactful climax. I admire and can very much relate to your honesty and vulnerability. As I said in one of my poems many years ago, without honesty nothing worthwhile could be done or known. In this part of your story you are exploring apathy and its effects. I have learned the hard way that apathy on the surface seems a way to have peace but ultimately is only a lying to oneself whose consequences cost far more than anticipated. To put it simply, apathy seems easy until it isn’t. I also like how you touch on some of my favorite verses from Psalms. Psalm 107 has long been a favorite due to all of the situations people find themselves in (usually from their own poor choices). Yet, when they cry out to God, He listens and delivers them. God bless you.

Thank you so much, Christopher, for taking the time to Read and Share such a thoughtful Comment. 🙏🏼 Your words about apathy really hit home. Sometimes what looks like Peace or an easier path can actually keep us from facing what needs to change.

I also love Psalm 107 and the reminder that even when our own choices lead us into difficult places, God still hears us when we cry out to Him. This is something that we often forget or just refuse to believe. His Grace and Mercy are greater than our failures.

All glory and Praise belong to God.

I’m grateful you’re following The Gambler, and I hope the next parts continue to Bless you. God Bless you, my Dear Friend 🙏🏼

What Ya’ Thinking?

I’m Willie

Hello and Welcome to my Website.
My name is William Torres, but my family and friends call me Willie. It is a pleasure to be here with you today, and I am excited to share my faith journey with you.

My journey has been amazing and fulfilling as a new Christian. I have seen God work in my life in ways I never could have imagined. I have grown closer to my faith and have seen Him work in my life and the lives of those around me. I am truly blessed to call myself a Christian, and I am excited to continue to grow in my faith.

I believe that I have come a long way in life. Over the years, I have worked hard to become a better man, husband to Frances Torres, and father to our children. I have strived to be a good friend and companion to those I have been fortunate to build relationships with. I have learned to appreciate the small moments of joy and fulfillment that come with every human connection.

I began writing stories that I believe were inspired by the Holy Spirit. These stories are my testimonies about the different trials I have gone through, and how the Lord has helped me to overcome them. Through this process, I’ve discovered that I can forgive those I once vowed to never forgive, and in turn, my relationships with them have been restored. They are now a huge blessing and a special part of my life.

I hope that through my writing I can be a source of encouragement to other people in their faith and relationship with the Lord. I pray that those who read my words will be blessed by the Lord and find strength and comfort in His Word.

To be honest, I have had to come to terms with the fact that I am not perfect, but it is in this place of acceptance that I am able to truly worship a God who is. His infinite love brings me joy, strength, and peace, and I am thankful for the privilege of being able to serve Him.

I have also started a Social Media Ministry on Facebook, which I invite you to visit here. Being Crazy For Christ is a platform where I share my journey of faith, and I am also on YouTube – Willie Torres Jr. and I am excited to see all that God will do through it.

This is my hope, and I’m so thankful for it. I’m thankful for the love of Jesus, and I’m thankful for the chance to grow in Him together with you.

You Are Loved
