The Gambler

Revised Edition – Part One

This has been one of the hardest series I have ever written.

I have been sitting on these pages for well over a year, unsure if I should share them. More than once, I almost kept them to myself. But with everything happening in our world today, and after much prayer, I believe the time has come.

This is not just another story. It is one of the most personal battles I have ever written about. It takes me back to one of the darkest moments of my life, when everything seemed to hang in the balance. My prayer is that, if you see yourself anywhere in these words, you will also see the grace of God waiting to meet you.

“Crazy thing is, out of all life done taught me… Before you get one win you gotta take a thousand losses.”
– Rob Wave –

Matthew 6:13 – English Standard Version
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

Some tables are covered with cards and chips. Others hold the weight of a soul. The Gambler is the true story of the greatest risk I ever faced, and the grace that met me there.

For seasoned card players, especially those who know poker, hands like a flush, full house, four of a kind, straight, or royal flush are signs of victory. These are among the strongest hands in the game and often lead to a win. For someone like me, though, whose card-playing experience is mostly limited to solitaire and being the unlucky target of a game of 52 Pick-Up, I would be completely out of my league. I would either lose right away or have no idea what was happening.

I am not a gamer. I do not play card games or gamble, and I am not much into video games either. The main reason is simple. I hate losing. If I do not think I can win, or at least earn a little bragging rights, I would rather not play. I do not like risking my time or money without some hope of success. So I stay away from games where losing is part of the deal. Some might call it pride. For me, the thought of losing is simply hard to bear.

Losing has stirred anger and resentment in me, feelings I have been surrendering to the Lord because I am not proud of them. Some may call me a sore loser, but I see it differently. I am the kind of person who likes to know there is at least a chance of having the upper hand before making a decision.

Proverbs 24:16 – New Life Version
For a man who is right with God falls seven times, and rises again, but the sinful falls in time of trouble.

Gambling has become an addiction for many, and the lottery is a temptation we often cannot resist. News reports celebrate huge jackpots, and people talk about what they would do if they won. The excitement spreads quickly. People stand in line and spend money chasing a prize that almost never comes. The odds may be one in 175,223,510, yet we still believe that this could be our day. We keep hoping, dreaming, and trying, unwilling to let go of the possibility of hitting the jackpot.

It is probably obvious that I have never been to Las Vegas. I am not even sure what I would do there besides drive around, take in the sights, eat, shop, and snap a few photos for Facebook. After that, I would probably start wondering if I could make the drive home the same day. I might pull the slot machine handle once or twice just because, “We are in Vegas, baby!” but it would not be a priority. The Gambler simply is not my thing. I have learned to value every dollar I receive. The most I ever risk is a two-dollar quick pick for Powerball, Mega Millions, or Lotto. I can live with losing five dollars without it affecting my finances.

But nine years ago, I took a seat at the gambler’s table. My life was on the line, and I had no idea who would walk away victorious. I found myself in a battle between God and Satan, where the stakes could not have been higher. This was war, and the consequences were real. I could lose everything, or I could come through with my life. I had never faced a wager so great, yet deep inside I knew this was my only choice. I placed my life on the table and prayed for mercy.

Join me in Part Two as we go deeper into the story of The Gambler.

I really like where you’re going with this brother. My first reaction was that to lose at things in life has made me stronger and I’ll stick to that but I also believe that the Lord put those lessons there for me to understand “Get up & try again.”

I understand the desire not to lose. Life has too much at stake to be dealt with haphazardly. But you put your life on the line, Willie. I’m interested to see how this progresses. I love Lewis’ quote: “Don’t let your happiness depend on something you may lose.” Food for thought. How often do I consider the cost to myself of what I’m choosing to do? Really looking forward to the next part.

Thank you so much Dayle. And Thank you for Reading and Commenting… That quote from C.S. Lewis is such a powerful reminder that we must be careful where we place our hope and happiness, because only God is truly unchanging.

Looking back, I can see how many choices I made without fully understanding the cost, but through it all, God’s grace never left me. He has used even my failures and struggles to teach me, shape me, and draw me closer to Him. All Glory and Praise belong to Him alone.

It’s always tough to revisit our darkest days as we often don’t recognize ourselves and it’s not an accurate reflection of who we are. But it’s important to share these stories in the hope it can help someone else who is going through something similar.

I’m really not a fan of gambling or playing the lottery. It’s crazy how much money people spend on tickets. I saw a woman last week at a gas station redeem a $5 winning ticket only to buy even more tickets. People would get a much better return by putting that money into a savings account earning 3% interest than by hoping to hit the jackpot.

I can identify with “The Gambler.” Because I have lost so many things that were dear to me, like you, I hate losing. However, losing has made me all the wiser. It has taught me that every setback carries a lesson, and every season of loss can become a place where God reshapes our perspective.

Sometimes the hardest hands we are dealt become the very ones that teach us when to hold on in faith, when to let go in surrender, and when to keep moving forward with hope. I can’t wait to journey with you in Part Two. Great post, brother.

There are things in my past that I’m not proud of brother. There was a time in my life where I felt so betrayed that to hurt back seemed logical. Wounds. They cut deep. Our Savior was wounded so harshly for us. And YOU, brother, your heart and soul are so sincere–to show the scars. Aww, sweet brother. Thank you. I’m so glad you feel my gratitude for your words. I know it’s hard. Lately I’ve been sharing parts of my testimony that the Lord wanted me to share with some in my circle. And even at the center yesterday.
He meets us there–in those broken places–to restor and heal us. For HIS glory–AMEN!
I’ve learned so much from those who have been tested by fire–fallen in despair–tripped in pits–and bitten by tragedy–God’s restoration in lives of those who have experienced Him to those depths is the best light in this dark world. I’m not saying those who haven’t had to experience such trials are “missing” something. But I do see bright lights, like YOU, in the stories of redemption that show the miraculous moments in which a veil is lifted and human logic can’t comprehend the change. It’s not transactional–it’s transformational and you can’t help but share it! You are that, Willie. You are loved by all of us! Keep on shining and writing–God’s not done with your story—even yet!!

I have never tried the lottery, and I have no plan so far. I dislike gamble because I don’t like the feeling of losing. We experience loss in life, but not in this case, which is expensive. I can turn that budget into important things.

Honest and wonderful thoughts, Willie. God bless, brother.

    Willie,

I really enjoyed reading this, and I like how you titled it The Gambler. I also have never really liked loosing, but I also felt like a loser for a big part of my life. Thankfully for Jesus who makes us victorious, and also making us the head and not the tail. I’m looking forward to reading more.

I also want you to know how much I enjoyed reading your book the Comfort or the Cross.

God bless and prosper you and your loved ones 🕊️

I love how you said that the hardest hands we are dealt can teach us when to hold on, let go, and move forward with hope. That is exactly where God’s grace meets us.
All Glory and Praise belong to Him, because He is the One who can redeem our broken moments and use them for His purpose.

Thank you for joining me on this journey through The Gambler. I hope you continue following the series, and I pray each part blesses you and speaks to your heart.

Ok, I am hooked, will be back for more of the story. I think the biggest gamble we ever took was when we went to Bolivia, SA with our two children in our 40’s. We were discouraged by some pretty high rollers in the ministry field. One mission rep we met gave us two and half strikes for several different reasons. My husband the gambler said we will just give ourselves that other half strike and strike out. So grateful for the Lord who deals our cards of life. I love to play bingo and when we lived in Vegas I took up going once a week with a 20 dollar bill and played bingo. Living in Vegas was the most useless place we ever lived. Gambling our life on the life of Christ for our life is the best bet we will ever made, for its a sure bet. I can tell this story is going to be a great learning lesson for us who read your post. Blessings.

Thank you so much … And Thank you for Reading and for your Wonderful Comment. I really enjoyed reading your story. What a step of faith it was to move to Bolivia with your children, especially when others were discouraging you. I love your husband’s response. It reminds us that when God is calling, His direction matters more than the opinions of others.

“Gambling our lives on Christ is the only “sure bet” we can ever make, because He is always faithful.” Amen 🙏🤗 All Glory and Praise belong to God for leading us, sustaining us, and never leaving us.

Thank you again for following The Gambler. I hope you’ll continue with the series, and I pray each part blesses and encourages you.

When things are really difficult, and we have no place to go, taking a gamble on Jesus and the Father is the only option. It is difficult to surrender our self will for his will, when we don’t really know Father God and his character. There are so many times when he calls us to surrender all, and in our flesh we resist. Thank you for sharing this personal story, Willie.

Thank you so much for taking the time to Read and Comment, my Dear Friend. You touched on something very real. Surrendering our will to God can be difficult, especially when we don’t understand what He is doing or where He is leading us. Yet that is where faith begins, trusting His character even when we cannot see the outcome.

My prayer is that The Gambler reminds us that taking a chance on Jesus isn’t really a gamble at all. He is Faithful, even when we struggle to surrender.

Thank you for walking through this story with me. I hope you continue following the series and that the coming parts bless you and strengthen your faith.

What Ya’ Thinking?

I’m Willie

Hello and Welcome to my Website.
My name is William Torres, but my family and friends call me Willie. It is a pleasure to be here with you today, and I am excited to share my faith journey with you.

My journey has been amazing and fulfilling as a new Christian. I have seen God work in my life in ways I never could have imagined. I have grown closer to my faith and have seen Him work in my life and the lives of those around me. I am truly blessed to call myself a Christian, and I am excited to continue to grow in my faith.

I believe that I have come a long way in life. Over the years, I have worked hard to become a better man, husband to Frances Torres, and father to our children. I have strived to be a good friend and companion to those I have been fortunate to build relationships with. I have learned to appreciate the small moments of joy and fulfillment that come with every human connection.

I began writing stories that I believe were inspired by the Holy Spirit. These stories are my testimonies about the different trials I have gone through, and how the Lord has helped me to overcome them. Through this process, I’ve discovered that I can forgive those I once vowed to never forgive, and in turn, my relationships with them have been restored. They are now a huge blessing and a special part of my life.

I hope that through my writing I can be a source of encouragement to other people in their faith and relationship with the Lord. I pray that those who read my words will be blessed by the Lord and find strength and comfort in His Word.

To be honest, I have had to come to terms with the fact that I am not perfect, but it is in this place of acceptance that I am able to truly worship a God who is. His infinite love brings me joy, strength, and peace, and I am thankful for the privilege of being able to serve Him.

I have also started a Social Media Ministry on Facebook, which I invite you to visit here. Being Crazy For Christ is a platform where I share my journey of faith, and I am also on YouTube – Willie Torres Jr. and I am excited to see all that God will do through it.

This is my hope, and I’m so thankful for it. I’m thankful for the love of Jesus, and I’m thankful for the chance to grow in Him together with you.

You Are Loved
