Comfort or The Cross -2

When Pain Demands a Decision – Part 2 of 3

Welcome to Part Two of Chapter One in the Comfort or The Cross series.

If you missed Part One, I encourage you to go back and read it first so you can fully follow this journey of the mind and heart as we wrestle with the question: are we choosing comfort, or the Cross?

You can find the first part of this chapter and series here.

As we step into this season of Lent, #Lent26 let’s take a moment to remember the comfort Jesus Christ laid down for us on the Cross.

“Comfort is fleeting. The Cross is real. I must choose not what eases my pain, but what saves my soul”

I won’t be creating images for this series because my hope is that the message speaks louder than the visuals.

To all of you, I pray you have a glorious day. May you enjoy this series, share it with others, and be truly blessed by it... YOU ARE LOVED

There is a question most believers hope they never have to answer.

It is easy to declare faith when life is comfortable. It is easy to follow Christ when pain is manageable and needs are met. But what happens when comfort is taken away? What happens when relief is offered at the cost of your faith?

Comfort or The Cross was born from that question.

This series is not about theory. It is about the heart. It asks what we would choose if following Jesus cost us everything. Safety. Healing. Stability. Even life itself.

The first chapter begins with a simple drive through a familiar neighborhood. What I saw there forced me to confront a deeper truth. Before we can talk about endurance or grace, we must answer one question honestly.

If comfort required denying Christ, what would we choose?

Part 2

Pain strips us down to truth. There may come a moment when pain demands a choice. Relief or Christ. Comfort or the Cross.

If denying Jesus meant instant relief, would you call it mercy or betrayal?

Jesus never promised comfort without cost. He said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” Matthew 16:24

The Cross was not a symbol of relief. It was and is a symbol of suffering, surrender, and obedience.

This is not a new question. The early church lived it. They were beaten, imprisoned, and killed, not because they lacked faith, but because they refused to deny it.

“They departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His Name.” Acts 5:41

They were offered safety, freedom, and life itself in exchange for silence or denial. Yet Scripture tells us they endured.

“Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.” Hebrews 11:35

The early believers faced pain that tested every part of their faith. They were beaten, imprisoned, even killed for the sake of Christ, yet they did not turn away.

Their suffering was public and obvious.

Mine is quieter and slower, but it is no less real.

I was born with a deformity on my right ear, a crooked jaw when I speak, a head that leans to one side, a speech impediment, and a learning disorder. This was only the beginning.

A major spinal surgery left me worse than before. I have an allergy to anesthesia, making future surgeries dangerous. Pain from a torn rotator cuff has stolen much from me, but I have avoided surgery because being put under could cost my life. A pinched nerve on my left side brings so much pain it keeps me awake. I have not slept more than five hours in a night for over six years.

Then came a minor stroke in April of this past year. And a couple months ago, I woke up to constant pressure to urinate, only to discover I had been peeing blood all night.

Pain has a way of making desperate offers sound reasonable.

So I ask again: do I take whatever is offered, whatever seems to take the weight off for now, instead of enduring the Cross and trusting Christ?

To Be Continued…..

I’ll leave you with this for now. I’ll be back soon with the last part of this series, going deeper and speaking more clearly and boldly into what Comfort of the Cross truly means.

Stay tuned for the finale of: When Pain Demands a Decision – From the Comfort or The Cross Series….

This is a powerful and convicting reflection on the cost of true discipleship. The contrast between seeking comfort and embracing the Cross is clearly and thoughtfully presented. It serves as a compelling affirmation that authentic faith often requires sacrifice, perseverance, and trust beyond our immediate circumstances.👍

hey brother, i have experienced my own share of pain but nothing as sustained and relentless as the cross that you carry. if I have, in any way, experienced that type of pain it was a matter of duration – some staying longer than others. whatever remains is a still a sharp ache but I’m used to it.

if there is something offered that can alleviate your pain without you having to sell your soul, my wish is for you to take it. I believe that the God of Scriptures can understand and would be more than willing to facilitate especially for you. You have been a faithful attendant to His word and as much as the His word was tough to guide Moses and Abraham, I can see those same words guiding you to his human instruments of purpose that can alleviate your ailments.

Be blessed Willie, my best regards to your family. Mike

Thank you so much Mike and Thank you for Reading and Commenting. Your words truly mean a lot to me, and I received them with a full heart.

We all carry our own crosses in different ways. Some stay longer than others, like you said, and those aches can linger. I’m grateful for your kindness and for the way you spoke about God’s Mercy and Understanding.

I trust that the Lord knows our limits and our needs better than we do, and He often works through people around us to bring help, strength, and comfort at the right time.

Thank you again for taking the time to read and to write such thoughtful words.

There is absolutely no way I can type anything that can help you. Why? You already have a path you have chosen. You walk it with absolute certainty. This is a rare event in today’s world.

You wrote: “So I ask again: do I take whatever is offered, whatever seems to take the weight off for now, instead of enduring the Cross and trusting Christ?” Your question, in my small opinion, divides those who take the easy path from those who take the path of ardent faith. The former walkers drift like zombies in their TikTok dreams; however, the latter walk a path only found by those who can see beyond seeing.

    Keep on walking, my friend.
    I know you will.

Thank you for Reading and for Sharing such Heartfelt Words. I have to admit, your comment brought tears to my eyes.

I don’t see my walk as anything special. I’m just trying to keep putting one foot in front of the other and trusting Christ with each step. Any strength or certainty people see in me comes from Him, not from me.

Your words about the path of faith really meant a lot. It is not always the easy road, but it is the one worth walking.

Thank you again for taking the time to Read and Encourage me. I’m grateful for it.

We have to live through pain to appreciate happiness. Easily attained happiness, be it materialistic or spiritual, leads to abundance, and abundance destroys the spirit. Socrates once said: “The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less.”

Reading through both parts of this reflection, what stands out is how the conversation itself has begun to carry the weight of the question you raised. In the first part, some readers shared deeply personal journeys of struggle and faith, and here in the continuation those voices seem to linger quietly in the background.

It reminds me that the Cross is rarely carried in isolation. Even when suffering feels intensely personal, the act of speaking honestly about it often creates space for others to recognize their own path in the same light. Your willingness to write about pain does more than tell a story—it gathers a small fellowship of people who are learning, in different ways, what it means to remain faithful when comfort is no longer the guide.

Brother, I had no idea…wow, that’s a heavy load. But you’re an inspiration to many. And you stand in good company. So many Godly men and women, like you, have persevered in their walk, giving glory to God despite hardships. The writer of “Beneath the Cross of Jesus,” Elizabeth Clephane, only lived to 39. She was sickly most of her life and she and sister gave all that they could spare to charity including, it is said, selling their horse and carriage for the benefit of the needy.

Horatio Spafford wrote “It is well with my soul” after losing his four daughters during a transatlantic crossing. Joseph Scriven was sickly most of his life. He wrote “What a friend we have in Jesus” after his fiancee drowned while crossing Lake Erie.

    I find their…and your…faithfulness incredible.

There’s an old story about an African missionary who was returning to United States after many years in the mission field. On board the same ocean liner was a rich celebrity. The boat docked and the celebrity was met with cheering crowds. After they all left, the missionary…now alone on the ship…looked up and said “Lord, I have served you many years… where’s my home homecoming?” He heard the answer… “You’re not home yet.”

Bless you brother, for your unwavering commitment to Jesus… your treasure is truly waiting for you in heaven 😎🙏❤️

The first Christians were helping to keep Jesus’ message alive. By not denying him, they contributed to the message reaching us today. Very noble of them, and I admire their living and true faith. It serves as an example. We all have crosses to bear. Nowadays, we don’t need to pay with our lives. Often, the crosses are moral. I don’t think it’s wrong to seek relief for the healing of the body. Jesus healed the sick. He wanted them to have relief.

And in those who keep always in remembrance that the eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. Thank you, Willie, for leading us to reflect on the true nature of faith and surrender. Pain strips us bare and places us before choices that go beyond comfort: accepting immediate relief or embracing the path of the cross, with all its depth and mystery. Your account reminds us that strength lies not in the absence of suffering, but in the courage to remain faithful to that which transcends, even when everything seems to conspire towards ease. A timeless reflection on courage, spirit, and authenticity. I wish you a blessed week! 😊🙌🏻✨🦊🦁🙏🏻

Wanted to add: Charles Spurgeon once said he was never so close to CHRIST as when he was on a bed of PAIN.

Thank you for sharing that. It really made me pause and Thank God. Like Paul said, “If I suffer, I suffer for Christ.” Now adding Charles Spurgeon words, that he was never so close to Christ as when he was on a bed of pain. Just reminds us that those hard places are where we feel Him the most. 🙏

I think experiencing pain make us more closer to God. Life is both pain and joy, and how can I appreciate life if it lacks problems? This is an evocative writing, Willie. Stay healthy and blessed!

A very profound post, Willie, with a lot to reflect on. Your words made me consider, what if higher trust were the way to lessen the suffering and even to bring about healing?! Whatever the case, God’s love is certainly the blanket holding us warm and safe in life’s challenges. Sending you light and blessings, my friend, today and always! ✨🙏

All I know is that without the physical pain, mental pain, heartaches, troubles, and etc., I would be a spoiled brat taking advantage of all the ease there is out there at someone else expense. I have run from pain, trouble without ever winning the race. If desiring to be like Christ, then we must accept the suffering just as He did. First asking God to take it away or at least ease it, but fully surrendering to His will for us. In the past five years I have spent a lot of time in the hospital. I came out still dealing with the pain, no cure but I also came out with a full spiritual heart as I surrendered my stay for His glory. The people I got to talk to was incredible at times. God opened doors every day. It has become my mission field, doctor waiting rooms, hospital bed. Of course I would love a painless life, one I could still walk for a few miles in but I have had that life and now I have an even fuller life at times due to suffering. I love these post on suffering they give us hope in our suffering, that it counts for something money cannot buy. Blessings on more post.

One of the things im beginning to appreciate reading this is that sometimes the path is chosen for us. There is a quiet yet defiant acceptance when we say as Christians, “the world behind me, the cross before me… no turning back.”
There will be many things that will happen to pull us off course. Paul prayed that God would remove his ‘thorn in the flesh’ in the end, he testified that the God told him ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’
Often, we do not see this in the moment.
I appreciate you sharing your personal health struggles, and I will pray for you that God’s strength is made perfect in your weakness.
I understand pain. And living with it is exhausting. But God is faithful. I receive strength for each day.
    Thanks for the share, Willie.

What stayed with me most in this part is how the Cross is no longer spoken about in abstract terms, but through the reality of a human body that carries pain day after day.

Reading the long list of physical struggles you described makes the question at the center of this series feel very different. The Cross is not only a symbol of faith or endurance; it becomes something lived in ordinary moments—sleep lost, movement limited, strength tested quietly over time. In that way, the reflection moves the conversation from an idea about suffering to the very human place where faith and the body meet.

Praying for you to always have the Lord before you, to be your strength, your healer, your hope, comfort, and peace. There is a day of healing coming … it’s the enduring that is the test but not for your failure but your perfection.

I’m Willie

Hello and Welcome to my Website.
My name is William Torres, but my family and friends call me Willie. It is a pleasure to be here with you today, and I am excited to share my faith journey with you.

My journey has been amazing and fulfilling as a new Christian. I have seen God work in my life in ways I never could have imagined. I have grown closer to my faith and have seen Him work in my life and the lives of those around me. I am truly blessed to call myself a Christian, and I am excited to continue to grow in my faith.

I believe that I have come a long way in life. Over the years, I have worked hard to become a better man, husband to Frances Torres, and father to our children. I have strived to be a good friend and companion to those I have been fortunate to build relationships with. I have learned to appreciate the small moments of joy and fulfillment that come with every human connection.

I began writing stories that I believe were inspired by the Holy Spirit. These stories are my testimonies about the different trials I have gone through, and how the Lord has helped me to overcome them. Through this process, I’ve discovered that I can forgive those I once vowed to never forgive, and in turn, my relationships with them have been restored. They are now a huge blessing and a special part of my life.

I hope that through my writing I can be a source of encouragement to other people in their faith and relationship with the Lord. I pray that those who read my words will be blessed by the Lord and find strength and comfort in His Word.

To be honest, I have had to come to terms with the fact that I am not perfect, but it is in this place of acceptance that I am able to truly worship a God who is. His infinite love brings me joy, strength, and peace, and I am thankful for the privilege of being able to serve Him.

I have also started a Social Media Ministry on Facebook, which I invite you to visit here. Being Crazy For Christ is a platform where I share my journey of faith, and I am also on YouTube – Willie Torres Jr. and I am excited to see all that God will do through it.

This is my hope, and I’m so thankful for it. I’m thankful for the love of Jesus, and I’m thankful for the chance to grow in Him together with you.
