Comfort Or The Cross

When Pain Demands a Decision – Part 1 of 3

“Comfort is fleeting. The Cross is real. I must choose not what eases my pain, but what saves my soul”

I won’t be creating images for this series because my hope is that the message speaks louder than the visuals.

To all of you, I pray you have a glorious day. May you enjoy this series, share it with others, and be truly blessed by it... YOU ARE LOVED

There is a question most believers hope they never have to answer.

It is easy to declare faith when life is comfortable. It is easy to follow Christ when pain is manageable and needs are met. But what happens when comfort is taken away? What happens when relief is offered at the cost of your faith?

Comfort or The Cross was born from that question.

This series is not about theory. It is about the heart. It asks what we would choose if following Jesus cost us everything. Safety. Healing. Stability. Even life itself.

The first chapter begins with a simple drive through a familiar neighborhood. What I saw there forced me to confront a deeper truth. Before we can talk about endurance or grace, we must answer one question honestly.

If comfort required denying Christ, what would we choose?

This series begins there.

I remember two winters ago, driving into Chicago for a doctor’s appointment. I was about forty-five minutes from home. I was hoping to receive a cortisone shot to ease the pain from my torn rotator cuff.

After the appointment, and after finally feeling some relief, I decided to drive through my old neighborhood. I did not plan it. It was a pull from deep inside, a quiet longing to see the streets I grew up on. I grew up in Chicago, and since moving closer to the Wisconsin border, I did not get back there often. Time, distance, and life had slowly made those memories feel like a dream. Yet something inside me kept saying, Go back. Just drive.

Something pulled me toward Humboldt Park, what I always called Little Puerto Rico Park. It was a place rich with culture, music, flags, and restaurants. The air there always carried the smell of something delicious. The food was unforgettable, and the memories ran deep. Humboldt Park was more than a location. It was a feeling. It was home.

As I drove around the park, something felt wrong. Something I had never seen before.

The park was filled with tents. They were everywhere. At first, it looked as if people were camping for an event or a festival. But there was no concert. This was not a campground. This was Humboldt Park.

I parked my car and searched for answers. I needed to understand what I was seeing. I typed the question into Google, expecting something ordinary. I expected an explanation that would make sense. What I found stopped me cold.

The tents were there because of a growing unhoused population in Chicago, made up of long-time residents and newly arrived asylum seekers who had nowhere else to go. People were living in tents in the middle of winter. Not because they wanted to. Because they had no other choice.

My first reaction was shock. Then sadness followed. This was a park I loved. But what hurt more was the realization that people were living there through a brutal Chicago winter. Cold. Snow. Wind. No real shelter.

I felt my chest tighten. I felt my breath shorten. I felt a sorrow so heavy it felt like it could crush my ribs. I thought of the children. I thought of the elderly. I thought of the mothers trying to keep their families warm with nothing but hope.

In that moment, I thanked God. I thanked Him for my home. For heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer. I thanked Him for my family, my job, and the ability to provide. I thanked Him that I had never been in that situation, and I prayed that I never would be, nor my family or friends.

Then a difficult question settled in my heart.

What would I do if I were living like that?

What would I give up to make it stop?

That question is the reason for this series.

If you lost everything, and someone came to you and said, “I will give you a home. I will give you food, money, comfort, even a palace to live in. You will never suffer again. All you must do is deny God and lay down your cross.” Would you do it?

Right now, it is easy for me to say no. It is easy to say I would choose the cross over comfort. But I also know I do not live in a tent. When it is minus twelve degrees outside, I run to a warm car. I rush into a heated building at work. I get to thaw out.

They do not.

They live in it all day. Every day.

So I wonder. If they were offered a warm room, an apartment, a home, or even a palace, and all they had to do was deny Jesus Christ, never pray again, never worship again, and never pick up their cross, what would they choose?

And now I ask this of believers.

Those of us who pray. Those of us who carry our cross. Those of us who believe that Jesus Christ is Lord. That He is the Son of God. That He walked among us, was crucified, buried, rose again on the third day, and ascended into Heaven.

Think about your own pain. Your losses. Your illness. Your grief.

If someone came to you and said, “I can take it all away. No more pain. No more sorrow. No more disease. All you must do is deny Christ.” Would you choose Comfort, Or would you chooseThe Cross?

To Be Continued…..

I’ll leave you with this thought for now. I’ll be back soon with the next part of this series, going deeper and speaking more clearly and boldly into what Comfort of the Cross truly means.

Stay tuned for Part Two of: When Pain Demands a Decision – From the Comfort or The Cross Series….

Oh WoW… I’ve been sitting with this for a few months, which is why I felt led to write it. I truly believe the Holy Spirit stirred this in my heart. There’s deep conviction in the question.

It’s easy to give the right Christian answer. But we are human. We suffer, we feel, we grieve, we hurt. Until we are actually in that moment, only God truly knows what is in our hearts.

Someone here in the comments mentioned Peter, how he denied Jesus three times, even though he loved Him deeply and was devoted. That reminds us that faith can be real and still struggle under pressure. Yet Jesus restored Peter with grace. That gives me hope.

God sees our weakness, and He meets us there with mercy, not condemnation.

This gave me something to think about. It’s true — we all say we’d stay strong in faith, but real hardship can change how we feel fast. I appreciate how this post pushes us to be honest with ourselves about what we would actually choose. Thanks for sharing this.

Your post brought up a memory of a couple of atheists I knew. I listened to their “logic,” but posed my own questions. The one thing that came back pattern-like is a need for easy answers. A dustbin. A broom. A sweep up on aisle five.

What they could not comprehend was that faith (in my little experience) requires dropping scientific materialism and picking up a reliance on intuitive meditations (call them what you will). In closing, all of these folks I experienced required instant answers that the aforementioned matter-based epistemology gave them. They love to prod with the “fairy tale” arrow, but never turn that arrow around to study the emptiness of their own cup in their hand, holding the latest Starbuck’s brew.

You’re right, Faith often asks us to let go of the need for quick, easy answers and trust God even when we don’t see it all. So much of belief is about quiet reliance on Him, not instant proof.

We humans are a fickle bunch. One day we are waving palm branches and the next we are saying, “Crucify Him.” I don’t think any of us really knows what we will do until we are in a certain situation. Those who can be resolute in their faith have usually been trained over years by the Holy Spirit’s leading through difficult situations. And then there are always outliers, like the thief on the cross who asked Jesus to remember him.

I often think of the words that Jesus tells his disciples:

11 “When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say; 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

Thank you for this series, Willie. I am looking forward to the next two parts. It is unfortunate that we are seeing more sites like the one you mention at Humboldt Park. The questions you ask here are very good ones.

You’re right, our hearts are fickle, and it’s the Holy Spirit who steadies us through trials. Those words of Jesus in Luke 12 remind me we are never alone; He equips us in the moment we need it most.

No matter what direction the world seems to be going, our calling remains the same, to stand firm in Christ.

My prayer is not rooted in fear of systems, but in faithfulness to Jesus. If the day ever comes when we are tested, I pray we would respond with courage, humility, and love.

In Joshua 24:15 it says, As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

That is the posture I want to keep, no matter the climate around us.

Prayer matters more than we often realize. The Lord sees every tear, every tent, every hidden struggle. When we lift up the unhoused and those in need, we are aligning our hearts with His.

In Psalm 34 it says the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. That gives me comfort knowing He is near to them even in the cold.

You’re absolutely right. It is easy to speak boldly about faith when life feels steady. The real testing comes when everything is shaken. That question has been sitting with me too, and I believe the Lord is using it to search my own heart first before anyone else’s.

Wow this was powerful, thought provoking, and I’m sure struck a cord for many. As for myself having experienced homelessness I have had to make that choice. I remember my sister saying to me you don’t have to go through this, you have choices. But I knew that the choices she was reffering too would not please God and would affect my faith journey. So I chose to carry my cross and trust God. Would I make that same choice again, I hope so but as you said it is easy to say you would if you are not going through. When we chose Christ, we chose to carry our cross. My prayer everyday for myself and others is that no matter what happens, we choose The Cross! I most definately will be sharing this in my ministry. God bless you!

For some reason I thought of Jesus while he was fasting for 40 days, Satan tried to tempt him with comfort by challenging him to turn stone to bread. Jesus rebuked him by quoting scripture.

Physical comforts can be lost in an instant, but God is always with us.

Here’s my answer Willie. I have been homeless, living under overpasses at night with temps dropping down to below freezing. I have been read my last rights in a land far from anyone I knew or loved. I have ran with the devil in my youth. Through all of this my savior didn’t forsake me but rather showed me that He would guide me into whatever was next. I have cussed God and paid the price dearly. One thing I did have through all of this was the gift of making my own choice and even though I threatened to disown him and give my soul to Satan he was patient with me. If he refused to forsake me after this how could I ever live without him? When I faced this simple truth my life was transformed and now I converse with our Lord many times each day. I don’t need to be in a church to do this as he is in me and so I talk to him on a very personal level. I enjoyed this and am eager to read the next part. God bless you brother and know in your heart that he will provide. 🙏✌️💗

What you said about God never forsaking you, even when you pushed Him away, is exactly why I write these words. That patience, that faithfulness… it’s everything. If He never let go of you, how could any of us live without Him?

I’m so glad you are walking with Him now, talking to Him daily. That personal connection is everything. All Glory goes to God for His Mercy, Patience, and Love in your life.

I believe it’s in a chapter of the third story of this series (not this chapter) where I will share how I went against God and the church. I can’t wait to share that with you, Brother.

I think of all those who have gone before me and chose the cross, taking their suffering for the joy that awaits them. When we remember time here ends and eternity is forever we are strengthened to cling to the cross. What would I do? I hope I would cling to the cross. As long as I could keep the Lord before me, I believe I would … not by my strength but his in me. What would I do? I like what Corrie ten Boom’s father told her about her faith and going into the concentration camps. You do not need a ticket until you get on the train.

I need to keep growing in my faith and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ now, so when and if that train should come I will have the ticket to see me through.

Thank you, dear friend Willie, for bringing us yet another profound text, starting this series. You raise an essential question, and I think the answer varies from person to person, depending on how each spirit reacts to scarcity, loss, and loneliness. For many, only upon reaching the limits of earthly existence do they begin to see and value what truly matters.

We live in challenging times, and we frequently see many exchanging Jesus for a “bowl of lentils,” selling the authenticity of faith for something fleeting. Between temporary comfort and the eternal Cross, the heart is called to choose that which saves. May pain teach us courage, may faith guide us, and may each decision reflect the love of Christ, which never fails.

Thank you, Willie, for reminding us that following Jesus is, in fact, the most sublime poetry of the soul. I wish you a blessed weekend, full of miracles and moments of light! 🙂🙏🏻✨🌌✍🏻🛐📖🦊🦁

And we do need trials to build our faith, but through them He is so close and never lets us go. Our suffering always has a good ending. He tests us at times to see if what we believe. Content Whatever the Circumstances Phil. 4:10-14
10-14 I’m glad in God, far happier than you would ever guess—Actually, I don’t have a sense of needing anything personally. I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.

The more my understanding grows of who God is the more I am willing to suffer for Him. I never felt like we suffered when we gave it all up for the mission field overseas. God still provided the necessities of life, air to breathe, food to eat, clothes to cover our bodies, and a roof over our head. We own nothing that is worth anything except our car. I see suffering as a road to walk on for Him. Pain can be a blessing when it is used to glorify God. Trust me, I love living in a first world country with anything I want available but I don’t find contentment in the anything though. Less is more and excess is heavy, it does not free us. Great question, one that should make us check our hearts. Blessings

Powerful post, Willie. May this #Lent26 season remind us of the comfort Jesus gave up for us. I’ve got a good bit of experience with people experiencing homelessness. It’s sad and heartbreaking. It’s also frustrating and disheartening at times. I think some people would tell you whatever you needed to hear to get what they wanted. Others wouldn’t say anything at all. I do know many that wouldn’t consider denying Christ for a moment, not even if it meant getting off the streets. This post makes me uncomfortable in a way, the more I read it, because it asks uncomfortable questions. And that’s a good thing. Blessings, brother. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

The Deed of Love: Presence That Changes Lives

Around us are people who are freezing, without food or shelter, and who are not to blame for their hardships. It is easy to discuss suffering in theory; their reality is immediate and harsh.

Every gesture matters. A warm meal, a blanket, a word of encouragement, or a community project can bring hope and dignity. We cannot remain indifferent when we have the means to make a difference.
Being present for those in need, supporting them with respect and compassion, is an expression of faith, empathy, and responsibility. Our presence can be warmth in the cold, protection in danger, and a reason for hope to endure.

Faith and action are not mutually exclusive; they complement each other. True love is shown through our deeds, and every choice can be a step toward good.

What an important text. It provokes great reflections. I think we should never choose something that sacrifices eternal values. Discomfort and the cross are preferable to moral loss in spiritual life… Gratitude ✨🍀

Thank you so much for Reading and Commenting. That truly means a lot to me.

I agree, we can never trade eternal truth for temporary comfort. The Cross may bring discomfort, but losing what is eternal would cost far more.

I’m grateful for your thoughtful words. All Glory belongs to God, who keeps reminding us what truly matters.

God Bless You both, today and always…

I’m Willie

Hello and Welcome to my Website.
My name is William Torres, but my family and friends call me Willie. It is a pleasure to be here with you today, and I am excited to share my faith journey with you.

My journey has been amazing and fulfilling as a new Christian. I have seen God work in my life in ways I never could have imagined. I have grown closer to my faith and have seen Him work in my life and the lives of those around me. I am truly blessed to call myself a Christian, and I am excited to continue to grow in my faith.

I believe that I have come a long way in life. Over the years, I have worked hard to become a better man, husband to Frances Torres, and father to our children. I have strived to be a good friend and companion to those I have been fortunate to build relationships with. I have learned to appreciate the small moments of joy and fulfillment that come with every human connection.

I began writing stories that I believe were inspired by the Holy Spirit. These stories are my testimonies about the different trials I have gone through, and how the Lord has helped me to overcome them. Through this process, I’ve discovered that I can forgive those I once vowed to never forgive, and in turn, my relationships with them have been restored. They are now a huge blessing and a special part of my life.

I hope that through my writing I can be a source of encouragement to other people in their faith and relationship with the Lord. I pray that those who read my words will be blessed by the Lord and find strength and comfort in His Word.

To be honest, I have had to come to terms with the fact that I am not perfect, but it is in this place of acceptance that I am able to truly worship a God who is. His infinite love brings me joy, strength, and peace, and I am thankful for the privilege of being able to serve Him.

I have also started a Social Media Ministry on Facebook, which I invite you to visit here. Being Crazy For Christ is a platform where I share my journey of faith, and I am also on YouTube – Willie Torres Jr. and I am excited to see all that God will do through it.

This is my hope, and I’m so thankful for it. I’m thankful for the love of Jesus, and I’m thankful for the chance to grow in Him together with you.

You Are Loved
