Dreams of the Shore, Guided by Grace πŸ„πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌ

From the time I was a young cub,
A dream bloomed within my heart,
Of beaches kissed by the golden sun,
And waves that danced with every part.
In Illinois, no ocean waves to greet,
But still, I held onto that hope, so sweet.

I grew into a young Kāne,
With surf stickers on my car,
Wearing shirts, bracelets, chains,
A surfer’s spirit, though near and far.
No board in my hands, no sea in my sight,
But the dream of the ocean burned bright.

I remember my first taste of the surf,
Watching on TV, glued to the screen,
Tears filled my eyes, so proud, so sure,
This was the dream I had always seen.
But life and its tides have a way to sway,
And God’s plan, I trust, led me another way.

Hawaiiβ€”oh how I long to go,
The surf capital, where the warm winds blow,
To meet the Kānaka ‘Ōiwi, hearts so kind,
To see the beauty of an island divine.
Reggae rhythms, in the summer sun,
Bring me back to dreams that never were done.

I thought I’d be a surfer, bold and free,
But Ke Akua’s (God) timing, perfect, you see,
Led me on a path with new grace to find,
And I learned that I must open my mind.
Maybe I’m not meant for the waves and the shore,
But there’s another purpose, that’s mine to explore.

To be a Christian Bruh’, a light in the dark,
To share His Word, to leave a mark.
Through struggles and trials, with trust in His hand,
I walk by faith, and in love, I stand.
Perhaps my calling is simple and true,
To love my wahine (wife) and children, as I should do.

A man of faith, humble and kind,
Striving to be a reflection, designed,
To honor the Greatest, Akua above,
With patience, with grace, and endless love.
Though I never surfed the waves so tall,
In God’s plan, I am still standing, after all.

The End

Thank you so much, that really touched my heart ❀️. Yes, self-doubt runs deep in me, I’ve always been this way, and honestly, I figure at this point in my life, it probably won’t change.

It’s funny, because as a Christian, we’re supposed to be more confident and secure. We are encouraged to turn to God for strength and assurance. In Philippians 4:13, Paul writes, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This verse encourages Christians to rely on God’s power, not their own. but that’s a tough battle for me to fight.

I’m truly blessed to have you on this journey πŸ™βœ¨.

God Bless You, today and always.

Wow. Thank you for this excellent poem which seems to be a bit of a summation of your life.

I can relate to this very well:

“To be a Christian Bruh’, a light in the dark,
To share His Word, to leave a mark.
Through struggles and trials, with trust in His hand,
I walk by faith, and in love, I stand.”

At the young age of 16, Jesus became my light in the dark.

I grew up 1 hour from the sunny beaches in California and 1 1/2 hours from the snow on Mount Baldy. Interestingly, a large group of guys at my high school were considered “surfers” whether they surfed or not.
I never surfed but more than a few of my friends did. My thing was baseball.

I also grew up about 1 hour or so from Coast Mesa, California, where Chuck Smith preached at the original Calvary Chapel. Besides attending church with my family, I would make the trip to hear Chuck Smith or one of the young preachers who were very impactful. It was a time when God’s Holy Spirit was moving greatly among young people and I have experienced nothing like it since those days in the late 1970s’.

I did visit Illinois a few times as a youngster because my Aunt and her large family lived there. I’ll never forget seeing fireflies for the first time. They seemed heavenly. So, while you were dreaming of the ocean blue, I was dreaming about my Aunt’s backyard at sunset in Illinois. Of course, it wasn’t just the fireflies. My Aunt was so funny and talented. She used many of her talents to bless the church that she attended.

Thanks again for sharing and may God bless your day, Willie!

Thank You so much for Reading and for your Kind Comment. I’m so glad the poem spoke to you, and it’s inspiring to hear how Jesus became your light at 16.

Your memories of California and the impact of Chuck Smith’s ministry are amazing, it sounds like such a special time of spiritual growth.

I loved hearing about your trips to Illinois and your first experience with fireflies; we didn’t get many this year, maybe because of the excessive cicadas πŸ€£πŸ˜‚πŸ¦— It’s incredible how God uses simple, beautiful moments like that to touch our hearts. Your Aunt sounds like a wonderful person who truly lived out her faith.

It’s so good to see you back online, it’s been a while. Thank you again for Visiting and sharing your story with us.

You’re very welcome. I really enjoyed the Illinois part. Still not sure what happened with the fireflies this year, it’s been such a mystery. It’s definitely been a strange year. Even the fall leaves didn’t change like they usually do, missing that beautiful display. I just don’t get it. And can you believe we’re already nearing December? It’s like this year has just flown by. Where has the time gone?

Good question, Willie. It does seem like 2024 went quickly. It’s too bad you didn’t get good Fall colors this year. We had a long stretch without rain and I think that impacted our Fall leaf colors to some degree.

Willie, wow, I can see how much work and love went into this…the YT is a perfect accompaniment πŸ„β€β™‚οΈβ€οΈ

Loved the line about a surfer’s spirit… you can be a surfer without ever riding a wave… it’s a lifestyle, enjoying the moment, calm acceptance of the present (β€œoh… no waves? No worries, I’ll work on such-and-such instead”)… very similar to the Christian walk.

There’s a Lutheran church I attend down in Kure Beach, NC. The pastor wears Hawaiian shirts with his clerical collar… the motto of that church is β€œSurfin’ on God’s grace.”

A few summers ago he had this summer program for kids that involved surf lessons and combining it with discussions about surfing and Christian metaphors. He asked a pastor from a Lutheran church in Chapel Hill to come help. I wandered over and during a break, I introduced myself to the visiting pastor and we started talking… It turns out that he was the assistant pastor at the church I grew up in down in Florida… I had just missed him, I had moved to North Carolina the year after he came to that church. What a small world! He had β€œPsalm 93” written on his board… When I looked it up, here’s what it said:

3 The seas have lifted up, Lord,
    the seas have lifted up their voice;
the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
    4. Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier than the breakers of the seaβ€”
the Lord on high is mighty.

What a small world! And there’s no rush, my friend… I didn’t start surfing until I was in my early 50s… Perhaps it’s still in your future. God knows the desires of our heart and perhaps there’s a way you can combine your love for God with the coolest thing I know.

For right now, I have three suggestions…
    1) maybe standup paddle boarding in Lake MI or another lake… it’s fun and pretty easy to learn
    2) Look up β€œGreat Lakes Surfing” in YT… now THERE’S dedication, lol
    3) one of the hardest things to master in surfing is the balance on the board once you stood up. Here’s something you can do in the comfort of your own living room to help you gain that balance… I actually made one of these myself by cutting a piece of plywood and using a 3 inch cardboard tube underneath it. This way if God gives you the green light, you’ll be ready to go out there and tackle those waves. πŸ˜ŽπŸ„β€β™‚οΈβ€οΈ

When I wrote this, you instantly came to mind, and I hoped you’d come across it. I just hoped you’d appreciate it, even if just a little. As for my surfing dream, it’s unfortunately over. With a broken spine, torn rotator cuff, and other injuries, the risk of falling and causing more damage around my neck or back is simply too great. I trust that God didn’t have this in His plan for me, and I’ve learned to accept it. I still love seeing photos and watching the competitions during the summer games. And if not, I can always enjoy reruns of Hawaii Five-O and catch glimpses of the Hawaiian shores. Mahalo, Brother.

Thank you so much for sharing all of that. It really touched me. I love the idea of “Surfin’ on God’s grace” what a powerful motto for life and faith. And I couldn’t agree more, a surfer’s spirit is about more than just riding waves; it’s about embracing the present and rolling with whatever comes, much like our Christian walk.

The story about the pastor you met from your old church is incredible. And Psalm 93 is a beautiful reminder of God’s might, even amidst the chaos of pounding waves.

As for me, while my surfing dream may have passed, your words are incredibly encouraging.

Mahalo’ for the love and inspiration Brother, and Mahalo’ πŸŒŠπŸ„β€β™‚οΈ for Reading and for Sharing your wonderful and uplifting comment.

I was a surfer in my youngest years, and regardless of being an amazing experience, it still stays far from the mystical union. I could relate to so many lines of your poem… Thank you for this. Sending you lots of light and blessings, my friend; have a wonderful day*

Thank you so much for Reading and for your kind words and sharing your experience. I love the imagery of the β€˜Ocean of Light’ it’s such a beautiful way to describe the peace and fulfillment that only God can give.

WoW , I had no idea you surfed, that is so awesome. I can imagine how surfing must have given you a unique connection to creation, but you’re so right, nothing compares to that deeper, spiritual union.

I’m so happy you liked the post. Of course, All the Glory and Praise belong to God.

Sending light and blessings back your way, my Dear Friend.

Be Blessed and Be a Blessing.

That’s a great and touching poem, Willie! The things we perceive as simple are sometimes more meaningful, influential, and important than something seemingly great and global :)

What a sweet story Willie. I have stood at the water’s edge on Lake Michigan in Chicago. I did love it. And have been to Hawaii several times. Most recent I saw it all in a different light……..it was so created by GOD’S hand, a true paradise! And maybe a small glimpse of the beauty of Heaven. It was both healing for me and my husband, especially since the past 3 years have been quite hard dealing with 2 cancer diagnosis. But, GOD is so so good. HE has us both in this healing place and I am profoundly grateful to HIM……..there are no words!! Keep looking vertical Willie……..but know you are always and forever LOVED!

Wonderfully written and illustrated Brother! Not much of a beach person myself, but I love looking at the water and the waves and taking in one of the wonders of God’s creation, realizing only a magnificent Creator could have it put in place. It’s hard not to fee His presence and whisper in the rushing waters. I’ve also dreamed of going to the Big HI to see the beauty that’s heralded by so many, but God only knows. I often need to remember His plans and ways are not mine but He’s promised us a place of unimaginable and glorious beauty which I’ll look forward to in the meantime. Thank you for always taking us on joyful, inspiring, reflective journeys that ignite our imagination, warms the heart and fuels our faith and hope in a God whose gifts are always good and perfect. Until we all meet in His celestial garden of paradise, we can still find beauty in His everyday finds when we take the time to view them through His eyes! πŸ’›πŸ’―πŸ‘πŸ˜πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

Thank you so much for Reading and for Sharing your thoughtful and encouraging words Sister Bev. πŸŒŠπŸ’› I love how you beautifully express the awe and peace that comes from simply gazing at God’s creation, like the waves and the water. It’s amazing how even when we’re not directly experiencing certain places, like the Big Island, we can still feel the presence of the Creator in all things. Your reminder that His plans are always perfect and beyond our understanding is so uplifting. I’m grateful that we can find beauty and inspiration in the everyday moments when we look at them through His eyes. πŸ™πŸ˜Š Looking forward to the day we all gather in His Heavenly Paradise; until then, I will keep Dreaming of visiting Hawaii.

Have a Wonderful and Blessed Thanksgiving. I am Truly Thankful to having you in our life.

πŸ˜πŸ–οΈπŸ¦Oh, how cool to see Leo enjoying the beach, and even dreaming of catching a wave. A very valuable reflection, many times our desires and our purposes are not aligned with God’s purposes, at least, at certain moments in our lives, but many times, we don’t listen, that is not the time and we catch the wave πŸŒŠπŸ™Œ. Our friend Leo, through reflection and self-knowledge, knew how to understand that it was not the time to be a surfer, but to fulfill another purpose. Thank you Willie, for sharing with us this beautiful story with beautiful images as always. I wish you a blessed family weekend. πŸ˜ŠπŸ™Œβœ¨πŸ¦πŸ„πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Thank you so much for Reading and for your thoughtful comment πŸ™πŸΌ I completely agree, sometimes our desires don’t align with God’s plan for us in the moment, and it’s through reflection and self-awareness that we can learn to trust in His timing. Not always easy to do, but, God knows Best.

Leo’s journey is a beautiful reminder that there is wisdom in knowing when to wait and when to move forward.

I’m thankful I decided to share this story, even though I almost deleted it afterwards, feeling like it wasn’t good enough. But then I realized how true it was, and I thought, why not share it? I didn’t want it to come across as seeking pity, but rather as a lesson in trusting God’s plans and timing. I’m so glad it resonated with you.

Wishing you a Blessed weekend as well, filled with Peace, Love, Blessings and Joy 😊✨🦁.

We often find ourselves in this dilemma, we look back and regret not having done something we would have liked to have done. I’m Willie

Hello and Welcome to my Website.
My name is William Torres, but my family and friends call me Willie. It is a pleasure to be here with you today, and I am excited to share my faith journey with you.

My journey has been amazing and fulfilling as a new Christian. I have seen God work in my life in ways I never could have imagined. I have grown closer to my faith and have seen Him work in my life and the lives of those around me. I am truly blessed to call myself a Christian, and I am excited to continue to grow in my faith.

I believe that I have come a long way in life. Over the years, I have worked hard to become a better man, husband to Frances Torres, and father to our children. I have strived to be a good friend and companion to those I have been fortunate to build relationships with. I have learned to appreciate the small moments of joy and fulfillment that come with every human connection.

I began writing stories that I believe were inspired by the Holy Spirit. These stories are my testimonies about the different trials I have gone through, and how the Lord has helped me to overcome them. Through this process, I’ve discovered that I can forgive those I once vowed to never forgive, and in turn, my relationships with them have been restored. They are now a huge blessing and a special part of my life.

I hope that through my writing I can be a source of encouragement to other people in their faith and relationship with the Lord. I pray that those who read my words will be blessed by the Lord and find strength and comfort in His Word.

To be honest, I have had to come to terms with the fact that I am not perfect, but it is in this place of acceptance that I am able to truly worship a God who is. His infinite love brings me joy, strength, and peace, and I am thankful for the privilege of being able to serve Him.

I have also started a Social Media Ministry on Facebook, which I invite you to visit here. Being Crazy For Christ is a platform where I share my journey of faith, and I am also on YouTube – Willie Torres Jr. and I am excited to see all that God will do through it.

This is my hope, and I’m so thankful for it. I’m thankful for the love of Jesus, and I’m thankful for the chance to grow in Him together with you.

You Are Loved

Willie Torres Jr.
