From the time I was a young cub,
A dream bloomed within my heart,
Of beaches kissed by the golden sun,
And waves that danced with every part.
In Illinois, no ocean waves to greet,
But still, I held onto that hope, so sweet.

I grew into a young KΔne,
With surf stickers on my car,
Wearing shirts, bracelets, chains,
A surfer’s spirit, though near and far.
No board in my hands, no sea in my sight,
But the dream of the ocean burned bright.

I remember my first taste of the surf,
Watching on TV, glued to the screen,
Tears filled my eyes, so proud, so sure,
This was the dream I had always seen.
But life and its tides have a way to sway,
And God’s plan, I trust, led me another way.

Hawaiiβoh how I long to go,
The surf capital, where the warm winds blow,
To meet the KΔnaka ‘Εiwi, hearts so kind,
To see the beauty of an island divine.
Reggae rhythms, in the summer sun,
Bring me back to dreams that never were done.

I thought Iβd be a surfer, bold and free,
But Ke Akuaβs (God) timing, perfect, you see,
Led me on a path with new grace to find,
And I learned that I must open my mind.
Maybe Iβm not meant for the waves and the shore,
But thereβs another purpose, thatβs mine to explore.

To be a Christian Bruh’, a light in the dark,
To share His Word, to leave a mark.
Through struggles and trials, with trust in His hand,
I walk by faith, and in love, I stand.
Perhaps my calling is simple and true,
To love my wahine (wife) and children, as I should do.

A man of faith, humble and kind,
Striving to be a reflection, designed,
To honor the Greatest, Akua above,
With patience, with grace, and endless love.
Though I never surfed the waves so tall,
In God’s plan, I am still standing, after all.

The End
Willie Torres Jr.

Thank you so much, that really touched my heart β€οΈ. Yes, self-doubt runs deep in me, I’ve always been this way, and honestly, I figure at this point in my life, it probably wonβt change.
Itβs funny, because as a Christian, weβre supposed to be more confident and secure. We are encouraged to turn to God for strength and assurance. In Philippians 4:13, Paul writes, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This verse encourages Christians to rely on God’s power, not their own. but thatβs a tough battle for me to fight.
Iβm truly blessed to have you on this journey πβ¨.

Wow. Thank you for this excellent poem which seems to be a bit of a summation of your life.
I can relate to this very well:
“To be a Christian Bruhβ, a light in the dark,
To share His Word, to leave a mark.
Through struggles and trials, with trust in His hand,
I walk by faith, and in love, I stand.”
At the young age of 16, Jesus became my light in the dark.
I grew up 1 hour from the sunny beaches in California and 1 1/2 hours from the snow on Mount Baldy. Interestingly, a large group of guys at my high school were considered “surfers” whether they surfed or not.
I never surfed but more than a few of my friends did. My thing was baseball.
I also grew up about 1 hour or so from Coast Mesa, California, where Chuck Smith preached at the original Calvary Chapel. Besides attending church with my family, I would make the trip to hear Chuck Smith or one of the young preachers who were very impactful. It was a time when God’s Holy Spirit was moving greatly among young people and I have experienced nothing like it since those days in the late 1970s’.
I did visit Illinois a few times as a youngster because my Aunt and her large family lived there. I’ll never forget seeing fireflies for the first time. They seemed heavenly. So, while you were dreaming of the ocean blue, I was dreaming about my Aunt’s backyard at sunset in Illinois. Of course, it wasn’t just the fireflies. My Aunt was so funny and talented. She used many of her talents to bless the church that she attended.
Thanks again for sharing and may God bless your day, Willie!

Thank You so much for Reading and for your Kind Comment. Iβm so glad the poem spoke to you, and itβs inspiring to hear how Jesus became your light at 16.
Your memories of California and the impact of Chuck Smithβs ministry are amazing, it sounds like such a special time of spiritual growth.
I loved hearing about your trips to Illinois and your first experience with fireflies; we didn’t get many this year, maybe because of the excessive cicadas π€£ππ¦ Itβs incredible how God uses simple, beautiful moments like that to touch our hearts. Your Aunt sounds like a wonderful person who truly lived out her faith.
Itβs so good to see you back online, itβs been a while. Thank you again for Visiting and sharing your story with us.
God Bless You today and always.

You’re welcome, Willie, and thank you for your kind words. I thought you might like that bit of info about Illinois. Now that I live in Arkansas, I get to see the fireflies yearly as well. I did seem like we had fewer this year as well.
May God bless you!

You’re very welcome. I really enjoyed the Illinois part. Still not sure what happened with the fireflies this year, itβs been such a mystery. Itβs definitely been a strange year. Even the fall leaves didnβt change like they usually do, missing that beautiful display. I just donβt get it. And can you believe weβre already nearing December? Itβs like this year has just flown by. Where has the time gone?

Good question, Willie. It does seem like 2024 went quickly. It’s too bad you didn’t get good Fall colors this year. We had a long stretch without rain and I think that impacted our Fall leaf colors to some degree.

What? No waves on the lake big enough brother? I think this a beautiful testimonial of your strong faith and beliefs. I have provided many laughs to the lord when he would look at my plans but thankfully he picked me up and carried me through the self imposed hell of enjoying a life of…interesting daily adventures?
His grace shows each one of us a different path in our journey home and I believe you are on a path of unknown serenity Willie. The light of his love washes over you like the spray of the surf washes on the sandy shores of Maui.
And the images…3.4 & 5 are excellent for this great poem Brother.

Willie, wow, I can see how much work and love went into thisβ¦the YT is a perfect accompaniment πββοΈβ€οΈ
Loved the line about a surferβs spiritβ¦ you can be a surfer without ever riding a waveβ¦ itβs a lifestyle, enjoying the moment, calm acceptance of the present (βohβ¦ no waves? No worries, Iβll work on such-and-such insteadβ)β¦ very similar to the Christian walk.
Thereβs a Lutheran church I attend down in Kure Beach, NC. The pastor wears Hawaiian shirts with his clerical collarβ¦ the motto of that church is βSurfinβ on Godβs grace.β
A few summers ago he had this summer program for kids that involved surf lessons and combining it with discussions about surfing and Christian metaphors. He asked a pastor from a Lutheran church in Chapel Hill to come help. I wandered over and during a break, I introduced myself to the visiting pastor and we started talkingβ¦ It turns out that he was the assistant pastor at the church I grew up in down in Floridaβ¦ I had just missed him, I had moved to North Carolina the year after he came to that church. What a small world! He had βPsalm 93β written on his boardβ¦ When I looked it up, hereβs what it said:
3 The seas have lifted up, Lord,
the seas have lifted up their voice;
the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
4. Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier than the breakers of the seaβ
the Lord on high is mighty.
What a small world! And thereβs no rush, my friendβ¦ I didnβt start surfing until I was in my early 50sβ¦ Perhaps itβs still in your future. God knows the desires of our heart and perhaps thereβs a way you can combine your love for God with the coolest thing I know.
For right now, I have three suggestionsβ¦
1) maybe standup paddle boarding in Lake MI or another lakeβ¦ itβs fun and pretty easy to learn
2) Look up βGreat Lakes Surfingβ in YTβ¦ now THEREβS dedication, lol
3) one of the hardest things to master in surfing is the balance on the board once you stood up. Hereβs something you can do in the comfort of your own living room to help you gain that balanceβ¦ I actually made one of these myself by cutting a piece of plywood and using a 3 inch cardboard tube underneath it. This way if God gives you the green light, youβll be ready to go out there and tackle those waves. ππββοΈβ€οΈ

When I wrote this, you instantly came to mind, and I hoped youβd come across it. I just hoped youβd appreciate it, even if just a little. As for my surfing dream, itβs unfortunately over. With a broken spine, torn rotator cuff, and other injuries, the risk of falling and causing more damage around my neck or back is simply too great. I trust that God didnβt have this in His plan for me, and Iβve learned to accept it. I still love seeing photos and watching the competitions during the summer games. And if not, I can always enjoy reruns of Hawaii Five-O and catch glimpses of the Hawaiian shores. Mahalo, Brother.
Thank you so much for sharing all of that. It really touched me. I love the idea of “Surfin’ on Godβs grace” what a powerful motto for life and faith. And I couldnβt agree more, a surferβs spirit is about more than just riding waves; itβs about embracing the present and rolling with whatever comes, much like our Christian walk.
The story about the pastor you met from your old church is incredible. And Psalm 93 is a beautiful reminder of Godβs might, even amidst the chaos of pounding waves.
As for me, while my surfing dream may have passed, your words are incredibly encouraging.
Mahalo’ for the love and inspiration Brother, and Mahalo’ ππββοΈ for Reading and for Sharing your wonderful and uplifting comment.
God Bless You, today and always.

πππ»π Fantastic post, Willie. Now I traveled through the waves together with LΓ©o, in thought. We often find ourselves in this dilemma, we look back and regret not having done something we would have liked to have done. But, I think that everything has a purpose, we are where we need to be, for our growth and the good news is that we can also change the course of things, it is never too late to do what we like. Thank you for the beautiful text and the beautiful illustrations of LΓ©o on the beach. Have a blessed Sunday.ππ»π¦πππ»

Thank you so much for Visiting, Reading and for your kind and thoughtful words. πππ» I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. You’re absolutely right, everything happens for a reason, and it’s never too late to pursue what we truly want as long as it aligns with God’s Plans.
Leo is also incredibly grateful for all the love he has received here on WordPress. Honestly, Iβm not even sure how the whole Leo thing started, but he has truly become a beloved figure here, and I give all the Glory to God for His wonderful creation and guidance.
I truly appreciate your support and reflection. Wishing you a Blessed Sunday. ππ»ββοΈππ¦ Mahalo’
