We’ll examine how sports can be a source of joy and connection and discover ways to channel that passion to enhance your faith rather than overshadow it.

As we navigate this exploration together, we will uncover fresh insights into how sports can coexist with and even enrich your spiritual life. Our goal is to approach this with grace and wisdom, helping you find a harmonious balance that honors both your love for the game and your spiritual path.

The Game Changer Part Seven

In the realm of Gridiron / College Football, my allegiance lies with the Oregon Ducks. The Oregon Ducks’ allegiance is not tied to a specific color, but rather to a culture of innovation, creativity, and individuality. Their constantly changing uniforms set them apart from any other college football team, making them a true trendsetter in the world of sports fashion. As an avid supporter, I take pride in the Ducks’ ability to consistently surprise and captivate with their unique style and their ability to consistently deliver thrilling performances on the field. The Ducks never fails to surprise and captivate their fans.

Unwavering Allegiance

The Ducks’ success is not solely measured by wins and losses, but rather by their relentless pursuit of victory and their refusal to give up. They demonstrate an incredible level of dedication and commitment, pushing themselves to their limits in order to achieve their goals. This unwavering spirit is what sets them apart from other teams and earns them the respect and admiration of fans and rivals alike.

Their motto, “Win The Day,” encapsulates the team’s relentless pursuit of victory, regardless of the uniform they wear or the colors they showcase; I embrace the uniqueness of their ever-changing uniforms.

“Win the Day: Embracing the Uniqueness of the Oregon Ducks”

Marcus Mariota, a young quarterback from Honolulu, Hawaii, has captivated my admiration with his exceptional talent. He showcased his skills while leading the Ducks to monumental victories during his time in college. Although he has transitioned to the NFL, my unwavering support for my beloved “O! Ducks” remains steadfast. I am proud to have witnessed his growth and development throughout his collegiate years, and I am excited to see how he will excel at the professional level.

When it comes to Major League Baseball (MLB), the Chicago Cubs have always held a special place in my heart. As a passionate fan, my loyalty to the Chicago Cubs runs deep, and it is a bond that will forever be a part of me. The love for this team is ingrained in my blood, and I proudly bleed Cubby Blue alongside my family. With the exception of my Father (May He Rest In Peace) and my youngest son, who both chose to be fans of the rivals and devote their allegiance to the Chicago White Sox.

“Bleeding Cubby Blue”

I am not particularly enthusiastic about hockey or soccer, but I do support the Chicago Blackhawks and occasionally enjoy watching the World Cup of Soccer. Just don’t ask me about any players or rules because I have no idea.

Hockey and soccer are two popular sports that are loved and followed by millions of fans around the world. However, I must admit that I am not particularly enthusiastic about either of these sports. While many people find joy and excitement in watching hockey and soccer matches, I have never really been able to develop a genuine interest in them.

During the Michael Jordan era of the National Basketball Association (NBA), I was a devoted New York Knicks fan, and my admiration for John Starks was intensified by the disdain he received from Chicago Bulls fans. Starks’ tenacity and skill on the court made him a beloved figure in New York, while also causing animosity in the Windy City. The fact that I appreciate the opposing team and relish in trash-talking makes sports so enjoyable for me, especially because I am not an avid sports watcher or participant.

“John Starks and the Joy of Rivalry”

In the world of sports, rivalries have always been a significant part of the excitement and passion that fans hold for their favorite teams. While some people may find it strange, I have always found joy in supporting the opposing team, rather than blindly cheering for the home team. This unique perspective has allowed me to experience the thrill of rivalry and indulge in enjoyable trash-talking.

“Finding Joy in Cheering for the Opposition”

Rivalry is an inherent part of human nature, as evidenced by the stories found in the Bible and throughout history. However, it is crucial to approach rivalry with respect and maintain control over its potential negative consequences. By fostering a culture of respect, setting boundaries, embracing collaboration, and exhibiting sportsmanship, we can navigate rivalry in a constructive manner. With these principles in mind, we can ensure that rivalry enhances personal growth, promotes healthy competition, and contributes to a harmonious and supportive environment.

Luke 9:46-48 – New King James Version – (NKJV)
46 Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest. 47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child and set him by Him, 48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all will be great.”

In conclusion, as Christians, we are called to embody the values of love, respect, and kindness even in the heat of competition. The Apostle Paul encourages us in Philippians 2:3 to “do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” By approaching rivalries with a spirit of humility and grace, we honor God and foster a sense of unity and respect. Let our passion for competition be tempered by our commitment to love and sportsmanship, reflecting the true spirit of Christian fellowship.

I truly hope that you enjoyed this series of The Game Changer and that it resonated with the message I believe the Lord gifted me to share with all of you. It has been my prayer that through these reflections, you have found both inspiration and encouragement. May the lessons of this series help guide us in our interactions and enhance our journey in faith, making us better representatives of Christ’s love and teachings in all aspects of our lives.

Thank you for joining me on this journey, and may we continue to grow in grace and unity as we support one another and honor God in all that we do.

One of the best things about sports is the unity of the team’s fans. I went to a Chief’s game, and they won with a blocked fieldgoal kick.
In that excitement you can be give a total stranger a hug and he will hug you back.
There really is solidarity among fellow fans. May the church also grow in a better fellowship as well.

Thank you for this interesting post, Willie.

I went to college in Oregon (at a small Christian college that no longer exists) so I do notice if any sports teams from there are doing well. They are the only Div. I team in the nation with an undefeated season. No matter what happens from here, they will always have that.

Interestingly, I watched the YouTube replay of their last game and during a portion of it I saw one of the players (I think it was the QB but not sure) kneeling in prayer on the sidelines. It made me wish for them to do well in the upcoming playoffs.

Baseball was a main thing that brought me out of my shell as a youth. My parents had to work me over to get me to tryout but everything after that went well. I ended up being a shortstop and played with several players who eventually got drafted. Baseball was king in California in those days. My understanding is that soccer has become very popular there now.

I was an athletic director at a small Christian school for several years. I’ve coached about everything at a lower level and even wore the stripes (as a basketball ref) for awhile.

Not as interested in sports as I once was, I still realize how so many things taught in sports translate very well to our spiritual lives.

Thanks again for the post and God’s blessings…

Willie, sorry for not responding sooner… I saw this was part of a multi-part post, wanted to read the other posts before commenting.

I just tried to read them… I read part 1 successfully; the other links seemed not to work. Rather than delay any longer, I’ll just comment on part one and part seven.

Great point about “all things being lawful”… But as you note, prioritizing God should be number one in our lives. Paul used a lot of sports analogies in his epistles… The Greek world was very familiar and enthusiastic about sports….running the race…etc. I’ve got an example of how the two (sports/religion) might go together in the modern era.

I went to school at Florida… While I was there, we really stunk… the perpetual doormats of the SEC. Years after I graduated, a young guy named Tim Tebow stepped in… And in an amazing four year career, won us not one, but two national titles.

Perhaps you’re old enough to remember the controversy surrounding him… He always included Scripture numbers on his eye black… eg “Jn” under one eye and “3:16” under the other. This of course polarized the sports world… Some people loved it, others hated it. Whenever the camera zoomed in tight, you couldn’t help it see a scripture verse. There was just no way to hide it.

He was drafted in the NFL, but never really made it… I’m convinced his unabashed stand for Christ was the reason. He was eventually picked up by the Broncos… but Elway and company refused to play him until the fans rented a billboard with a simple message: “Play Tebow.” They finally put him in when the team was 0–4. Tim won every game after that, I believe, and got them through two rounds of the Super Bowl playoffs. Despite this remarkable record, he was released by the Broncos postseason and never really want anywhere else. However, his Christian outreach and philanthropic work continue to define him and bring glory to God. Who knows how many millions he reached with his eye black.

There’s an old story about a missionary and a movie star both returning from Africa on the same ship. The movie star was met by all these reporters and paparazzi clamoring for his autograph. Not one person welcomed the missionary.

The missionary looked up at the sky and asked “Lord, I’ve labored for you for these past 10 years and not one person welcomed me home. I don’t get it.”

    He heard a voice… “You aren’t home yet.” 😎🙏👏

Thanks, Brother, for a thought-provoking and creative series of posts 😎👍

Hello Brother, I Hope and Pray that you are doing well. I want to apologize for my late response to your comment.

Thank you so much for Reading and Commenting. I completely understand how busy life can get, and I appreciate you taking the time to read and reflect on the posts. I’m so glad you enjoyed part one and part seven, and I’m sorry the other links didn’t work as intended, please let me know if you were able to catch up or read them; if not, maybe I can send you the chapter somehow.

I love the example you shared about Tim Tebow. His boldness in using his platform to share his faith was truly inspiring and is a perfect modern example of how sports and faith can come together. His story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can make when they stand firm in their beliefs, no matter the challenges.

The missionary story you shared is also incredibly moving. It’s such a beautiful reminder that our true home is not here, and our labor for Christ is never in vain. I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect with you through this series and hear your insights. Your words mean a lot, and I look forward to more conversations like this.

In my book, Take Me Out With The Crowd, I mention Tim Tebow along with other athletes who aren’t ashamed to show their faith both on and off the field. It’s actually in Chapter Eight, and maybe in the near future, I’ll share a bit of it here. I need to pray on how God wants me to proceed, and if He leads me to, I will.

Please feel free to let me know if you were able to catch up on the other posts, and thanks again for sharing such wisdom and encouragement.

God Bless You, today and always.

I have grown closer to my faith and have seen Him work in my life and the lives of those around me. I am truly blessed to call myself a Christian, and I am excited to continue to grow in my faith.

I believe that I have come a long way in life. Over the years, I have worked hard to become a better man, husband to Frances Torres, and father to our children. I have strived to be a good friend and companion to those I have been fortunate to build relationships with. I have learned to appreciate the small moments of joy and fulfillment that come with every human connection.

I began writing stories that I believe were inspired by the Holy Spirit. These stories are my testimonies about the different trials I have gone through, and how the Lord has helped me to overcome them. Through this process, I’ve discovered that I can forgive those I once vowed to never forgive, and in turn, my relationships with them have been restored. They are now a huge blessing and a special part of my life.

I hope that through my writing I can be a source of encouragement to other people in their faith and relationship with the Lord. I pray that those who read my words will be blessed by the Lord and find strength and comfort in His Word.

To be honest, I have had to come to terms with the fact that I am not perfect, but it is in this place of acceptance that I am able to truly worship a God who is. His infinite love brings me joy, strength, and peace, and I am thankful for the privilege of being able to serve Him.

I have also started a Social Media Ministry on Facebook, which I invite you to visit here. Being Crazy For Christ is a platform where I share my journey of faith, and I am also on YouTube – Willie Torres Jr. and I am excited to see all that God will do through it.

This is my hope, and I’m so thankful for it. I’m thankful for the love of Jesus, and I’m thankful for the chance to grow in Him together with you.

You Are Loved
