This Chapter Series is from the Book – “Take Me Out With The Crowd”
Welcome to the Continuation of The Game Changer!
Today, we continue our journey, exploring how your passion for sports intersects with your faith. In this chapter, we will delve deeper into how your love for sports can both inspire and challenge your spiritual life.
This chapter isn’t about criticizing sports fandom but finding a meaningful balance between your enthusiasm for sports and your spiritual commitments. We’ll examine how sports can be a source of joy and connection and discover ways to channel that passion to enhance your faith rather than overshadow it.
As we navigate this exploration together, we will uncover fresh insights into how sports can coexist with and even enrich your spiritual life. Our goal is to approach this with grace and wisdom, helping you find a harmonious balance that honors both your love for the game and your spiritual path.
If you haven’t read Part 1 – 5 yet, I encourage you to check it out here, here (For Part Two), here (Part Three) here, (for Part Four) and here, (for Part Five) before proceeding. We are exploring a profound and transformative topic, and starting from the beginning will help you fully engage with what’s to come.
I believe this message is inspired by the divine, and my hope is that it will bring inspiration and change into your life. Let’s continue discovering how sports can be a Game Changer in your spiritual journey. Welcome to the next step of our enlightening adventure!
The Game Changer Part Six
Living in Chicago Bears territory as a passionate Minnesota Vikings supporter can be challenging, as it can feel like a “No-Go” or a “Technical Foul” in sports. Being surrounded by rival fans can make it seem like committing a cardinal sin in the world of sports fandom.

The rivalry between the two teams is deep, with a long history of intense matchups and fierce competition for dominance on the football field.
The Chicago Bears, one of the oldest and most storied franchises in the NFL, have a strong and dedicated fan base. Their home games at Soldier Field are a spectacle to behold, with fans dressed in navy and orange cheering passionately for their team. However, as a Vikings fan, it can feel isolated, requiring resilience and determination.

Despite this, being a minority among Bears fans can also create a sense of community with fellow Vikings supporters. When you come across another fan clad in purple and gold, there is an instant connection, a shared understanding of the hardships and joys that come with supporting the Minnesota Vikings.

Living in Chicago Bears territory as a Vikings fan may seem like a challenge, but it also strengthens your loyalty and passion for the team. It serves as a constant reminder of the unwavering support you have for the Minnesota Vikings and the resilience you possess as a fan. Embrace the challenges, stand tall, and proudly represent purple and gold amidst a sea of navy and orange.
A few years ago, I unexpectedly became a fan of the New Orleans Saints in the NFL, despite being a proud “Purple and Gold” supporter. Since 2020, I have grown to love the “Old Gold and Black” color combination. Despite being from Chicago, Illinois, I have chosen a different path, forming allegiances with the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints.

While some Chicagoans chant “Bear-Down!” in support of the Chicago Bears, others like me chant “Skol!” in support of the Minnesota Vikings and “Who Dat!” in support of the New Orleans Saints. These chants represent the deep loyalty and passion that fans have for their respective teams.
Joshua 6:20 – The Message – (MSG)
When the people heard the blast of the trumpets, they gave a thunderclap shout. The wall fell at once. The people rushed straight into the city and took it.
Initially hesitant to support the New Orleans Saints, I eventually developed an appreciation for their resilience, determination, and passionate fans, known as the “Who Dat Nation.” As a Christian, I was intrigued by Drew Brees, the team’s quarterback, who embodies strong faith and religious beliefs both on and off the field.

“I live by two very simple Christian fundamentals, and that is love the Lord with all your heart, mind, and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. The first one is very self-explanatory. The second one, love your neighbor as yourself, what does that mean to me? It means love all, respect all and accept all. So that is actually how I live my life.”
– Drew Brees
- Love the Lord with All Your Heart, Mind, and Soul:
- Matthew 22:37-38 (NIV): “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.’”
- Deuteronomy 6:5 (NIV): “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”
- Love Your Neighbor as Yourself:
- Matthew 22:39 (NIV): “And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
- Mark 12:31 (NIV): “The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
- Galatians 5:14 (NIV): “For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
- 1 John 4:7 (NIV): “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.”
These scriptures highlight the centrality of love in Christian life, reflecting both our devotion to God and our relationships with others. Your approach to living these principles—through love, respect, and acceptance—captures the heart of Jesus’ teachings and exemplifies a Christ-centered life.

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus invites us to lean on Him during times of weariness and doubt, offering us rest and comfort in the midst of our struggles.

Something we need to remind ourselves in the midst of turmoil, to love our neighbors because they are also God’s image bearers. It is so easy to lose that insight and focus isn’t it. I think, lately there are quite a few Christian sports personalities who are living their faith isn’t it and that is encouraging.
Thankyou for this reminder Willie. Have a wonderful day!

It’s so true that in the midst of challenges, it can be easy to forget the importance of seeing others as image-bearers of God, especially when emotions run high or situations become overwhelming. The reminder to love our neighbors, even when it’s difficult, truly puts things into perspective. It’s something we all need to practice more and make a conscious effort to live out in our daily lives.
Thank You for Reading and commenting.
God Bless You and Your Family, today and always.

Willie, I can relate being in The Texas panhandle, in the heart of Texas Tech country. My favorite player is Patric Mahomes who now plays with the KC Chiefs. He was a quarteback at Texas Teck, and so I cheer him on.
Texas says, Dallas Cowboys, and Houston Texans, both of which I also like, but they’re not KC.
I was reading your post and I began to realize that you’re in Chicago, and your heart is on the Vikings. You are a stranger, we all are.
Our citizenship is in heaven, though we live in this temporal world.
I’ll actually be traveling to KC this week to watch their home game. It isn’t heaven, bit it won’t be the Texas panhandle either.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that our hearts are attached to the kingdom of Heaven, and let us seek to enter into heaven where our true citizenship is.
Blessings brother.

Thank you so much for Reading and Commenting. I was concerned that readers might not fully grasp the message I was trying to convey or that the post might come across as boring. I intentionally started this one where the previous post left off, to set the stage for the main point. I’m really glad you understood the direction I was going.

Ah! Well, the gnomes drew me in. I’m not a sports fan, but my husband is, so he often has a game on this time if year. I thought I might check it out and see what you had to say on the subject. Ha! Now, I see it’s a series.

Yes, this is from my second book. I wanted to share a snippet from one of the early chapters. There’s quite a bit of sports talk, but the real message that the sports discussions lead to is the main focus. The few who have read it so far have given it thoughtful feedback (and interestingly, many of them aren’t even sports fans—go figure! It’s actually the non-sports fans who seem to enjoy this series and book the most). All for the Glory of God.
And the Gnome pictures? Honestly, I’m not sure how the idea even came to me (must’ve been God’s inspiration), but they were an absolute joy to create.

😊👏🏻What a wonderful text, Willie. The importance of the two commandments of Master Jesus becomes urgent in a world of so many conflicts, which unfortunately happens in the sports world. What should be something for entertainment and relaxation often ends in fights and deaths. Rivalries, hatred and fanaticism for teams, where we forget to “love our neighbor as we love ourselves”. Thank you for bringing us this message. Have a blessed weekend with your family. 😉🙏🏻⚽🏈🦁

Thank you so much for Reading and for your Thoughtful Comment! 😊🙏 You’re absolutely right, the teachings of loving our neighbor and loving God are truly needed in every aspect of life, especially in a world where rivalry and conflict often overshadow the true purpose of sports, which should be about enjoyment, unity, and respect. It’s a powerful reminder to always strive for compassion, even in the midst of competition.
I Truly appreciate you taking the time to reflect on that with us.
Be Blessed and Be a Blessing. 🙏

I really like your perspective on sports and spirituality, Willie! My inner bells rang louder by the end of your post when you mentioned the two fundamentals of life: love for God and love for your neighbor. If the earlier is straightforward, the last one may be quite challenging, given the complexity of human relationships and associated emotions. More attention, intention, and honest engagement are required to live in higher alignment, loving your neighbor as yourself or as God. Thank you so much for your wonderful post! I truly appreciate it! Sending you light and blessings; have a wonderful day*

Thank you so much Susana for Reading and Commenting. Living with love for both God and others requires continuous practice, patience, and a genuine commitment to deeper connections. I’m so glad that this post resonated with you.
I completely agree that while loving God seems straightforward, loving our neighbors, especially with all the complexities of human emotions, can be quite a challenge. It’s a process that requires intention and effort, and sometimes, the hardest part is truly seeing others as we see ourselves, with compassion and understanding.
I appreciate your thoughtful reflection, and I feel your light and blessings.
Hoping and Praying for the Lord’s Blessings to you, today and always.

This is a wonderful piece of work, Willie. The biblical reference to “Love thy neighbor” is an issue to be considered in sports competitions. What should be a moment of distraction and joy often ends in tragic events due to the rivalry between the teams’ fans. You manage to convey this problem very well and at the same time offer us a new perspective to change this situation. How great it would be if sports competitions, especially the fans, united in the two commandments that Christ left us: “Love God above all things and Love your neighbor as yourselves.” Thank you for sharing with us and have a blessed weekend. 🤗👏🏻✨🦁🏈⚽

Thank you so much for Reading and for your thoughtful words. It’s truly heartbreaking that something as beautiful as sports, meant to bring joy and unity, can sometimes spiral into division and even violence. You’re absolutely right, if we all embraced those two commandments, both on and off the field, it could change the way we experience not only sports but also how we treat one another in every area of life. That’s really the heart of the Game Changer series, learning to love one another and, most importantly, putting God first in everything. Just imagine how different things could be if both fans and players embodied that love and respect.
I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. If we could all live by those principles, it would truly be a Game Changer.
Wishing you a wonderful, safe and Blessed week. 🙏✨

My husband has always been a Bears fan due to the fact that we both were born and raised in Chicago. He has always adopted teams wherever we have lived. Broncos for Colorado and now Arizona Cardinals. But we both have never gone crazy over it all. Fun to watch for me, but I can take it or leave it.
As for me and figure skating, GOD was my coach and direction in teaching and leading younger girls in the competitive sport. And HE blessed me………my fav time was being able to pray on the sidelines with a student before she went out to skate her program or take a test. But just a note, I have LOVED the Colorado Avalanche. One of the team’s wives used to actually teach for me and was on our staff. Guys on that team were incredibly nice.
Stay vertical Willy and YOU ARE LOVED!

I love how sports have shaped both of your lives in unique ways, and it’s beautiful to hear about the role faith played in your figure skating journey. Your experience of coaching and praying with your students is a beautiful testament and really resonates with the theme of connection and purpose in this series of, The Game Changer. It’s inspiring to hear how you’ve found meaning in both sports and life. And yes, staying vertical is always the goal, 😊
