This Chapter Series is from the Book -“Take Me Out With The Crowd”
Welcome to The Game Changer, the first chapter of our exploration into the connection between Sports and Religion. I chose this title because this chapter represents a key moment where we begin to see how our love for sports can sometimes push our faith and spiritual practices to the side. As we go through this chapter, you’ll have the chance to reflect on how sports might affect your spiritual life and what that means for you. Get ready to think deeply and open your heart as we dive into this important topic.
Explanation of the Chapter Title:
The title The Game Changer signifies a pivotal moment where we begin to see the relationship between sports and religion from a new perspective. This chapter invites you to open your mind, eyes, ears, and heart to understand how your passion for sports might be influencing your faith. It’s not about criticizing sports fandom, but about recognizing where you might need to set boundaries. As we explore this topic, we will challenge old beliefs and uncover new insights into how sports can impact your spiritual life. This chapter aims to be a transformative experience, helping you find a better balance between your love for sports and your spiritual commitments. So, without further ado, welcome to The Game Changer…
Chapter 1: The Game Changer
Sports is good and beneficial when kept in perspective. Never should sports be allowed to crowd out Time With God or become more important than seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness. Idols are not to be a part of the Christian life. And in whatever we do, on or off the field, we are to do it all to the glory of God.

Proverbs 25:27 – New International Version – (NIV)
It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honorable to search out matters that are too deep.
As a self-proclaimed sports fan, I have my favorite teams and players that I root for. I wouldn’t say I’m a die-hard fan, but I do enjoy watching games and keeping up with the latest news in the sports world.
I am not someone who is obsessed with watching sports on television. Unlike certain individuals, I don’t rearrange my entire day or interrupt my normal activities just to catch a game or race. Instead, I tend to prioritize my daily routine and only indulge in watching sports when I have some spare time. If I happen to stumble upon a televised game during one of these moments, I might choose to sit down and enjoy it. However, I never go out of my way to intentionally seek out sports broadcasts.

For me, sports are not a vital part of my life. While I can appreciate the excitement and skills displayed by athletes, it doesn’t consume my thoughts or dictate my schedule. I find enjoyment in a variety of other activities and interests outside of the realm of sports. I still find joy in cheering on my favorite teams and players whenever I can.
1 Corinthians 6:12 – English Standard Version – (ESV)
All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.
On August 3rd, 2023, the NFL started its Preseason with an exciting match between the New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns. This game marked the beginning of the NFL season, generating anticipation and excitement among football fans.
The Jets, entering this new season, have acquired a new star quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. After spending 18 successful years with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers has brought his talent and experience to the Jets. Although he did not participate in this particular game, his presence on the team has created high hopes for the upcoming season.
The start of the NFL Preseason not only provided an opportunity for teams to fine-tune their strategies and evaluate their players, but it also ignited a sense of anticipation for the season ahead. Football enthusiasts eagerly awaited the chance to witness the on-field action, showcasing the skills and abilities of their favorite players.

On August 12th, 2023, the Chicago Bears kicked off their preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. This highly anticipated event ignited a wave of excitement throughout the city of Chicago and the entire state of Illinois. The game was highly anticipated by fans and spectators, with many star players not playing or playing for a short period. (This is a common practice during the Preseason to avoid injuries and give less-experienced players a chance to prove themselves on the field.) Chicago Bears fans were eagerly anticipating the game, with the grandeur of Soldier Field Stadium, bustling bars, and vibrant restaurants adding to the excitement.

Despite it being a Saturday early afternoon, nothing was going to deter fans from attending The Big Game. They had planned for this moment for weeks, carefully considering all the expenses that would accompany their game day experience. From purchasing tickets and parking passes to indulging in delicious stadium food and refreshing beverages, every detail has been thought through to ensure a memorable day.

In our modern society, it is ironic how we often prioritize our hobbies and addictions without considering the costs involved. In today’s fast-paced world, individuals are increasingly driven by their passions and desires. People spare no expenses when it comes to indulging in activities that bring them joy and satisfaction. However, when it comes to the act of tithing and giving back to God, we tend to put it on the back burner, finding excuses or ways to avoid it. This tendency to neglect putting God first in our lives can have potential consequences that may go unnoticed. This story aims to shed light on the tendency to neglect putting God first in our lives and the potential consequences that may follow.

Malachi 3:8 – English Standard Version – (ESV)
Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions.

You’re right! We tend to glorify the rich and famous sports stars at the cost of our duties to God. I have no such passion for sports but we all have our idols. We must be careful not to go wandering in the wilderness.

I used to be a devoted fan of college football more than the NFL, and for a good while, I put away sports because of the BLM wars and how it got into sports.
Now I have an interest in football, but not so consuming that it occupies my time and heart.
It is more of a passing interest, and I feel a reasonable diversion without it being a consuming conflict.
I look forward to seeing where you go with this.
Blessings.

I’m not a sports fan, so I’m in the clear on this one! 😊 I see there’s some backlash now on social media over the idolization of celebrities and sports stars. IMHO, we shouldn’t worship people like demigods. Keep writing what’s in your heart, Willie. 🙏

For those who aren’t sports fans, it might be a bit challenging to relate to the series at first. However, the core message of The Game Changer is about how we often prioritize worldly things over God and the Church. It explores how we become consumed by idols and idolatry, giving them more attention and importance than we give to our relationship with God.
I truly Hope you stick around and maybe allow the Holy Spirit to guide you through the series.
Please note that it may be a bit lengthy, but I believe and hope it will bring many blessings.

An important and controversial topic even in society. When parents tell a son or daughter to pray two rak’ahs instead of playing football or a game, they are supposed to say play football or a sports game. Play sports and do not forget your Lord, your duties, and the teachings of God.

Thank you so much for Reading and Commenting.
The purpose of this post and the upcoming book is not to criticize sports or suggest that they are inherently bad. Instead, the goal is to highlight that while sports and related activities can be enjoyable, they should never take precedence over church or our relationship with God. Having once been in that position myself, I have gained a new perspective and now wish to help others see this truth as well.

Thank you so much for Visiting, Reading and Commenting.
Thank you for your interest! It’s intriguing how sports can shape people’s lives so significantly, sometimes influencing their schedules and travels. My book, Take Me Out With The Crowd, delves into how our enthusiasm for sports can sometimes overshadow our spiritual commitments. While I was initially hesitant to share this on WordPress, knowing it might reduce sales, I felt strongly guided by the Lord to do so. I hope that this message reaches those who need it, and that it helps open eyes, ears, and hearts to a deeper understanding. Looking forward to sharing more and hearing your thoughts.

I Hope you stick around for this series. This Series will be lengthy, but my Hope is that it delivers profound messages and teachings. It may offer blessings, provoke introspection, or even challenge us. I just Hope and Pray that the Lord’s word touches us in the way He knows is best. I’m glad you enjoyed the pictures! I anticipate that the upcoming ones might draw some judgment (as they often do 😂😂). It’s a reminder that whenever we put ourselves out there, we can face criticism. The devil often tries to undermine our efforts, but let’s keep moving forward with resilience. Our focus must remains on sharing positivity and truth.

It’s so important to find that balance between our hobbies, like sports, and our spiritual life.
Sports can be a great way to stay healthy and build discipline, but we always need to keep Christ at the center of everything we do. That is the main reason I wrote this book and why I am sharing here on this series.
While some may not resonate with a few, I Hope they will be open to understanding and receiving the overall message.

Thank you for your understanding. I realize that a series focusing on both sports and religion might not appeal to everyone, but I hope people will give it a chance. This isn’t about promoting sports or being like Howard Cosell with nonstop commentary. The main goal is to help people examine their priorities. If sports are taking precedence over God—if people go all out for a game but make excuses to miss church, or if they spend freely on tickets and stadium expenses but are reluctant to give to the Lord—then there’s an issue. This series aims to address that imbalance. I hope you and others will give it a chance, as it may prompt reflection and conviction. I certainly felt that way while writing it.
Thank you for Visiting, Reading and Commenting.

I agree. With football season approaching and the excitement growing, it’s remarkable how much hype surrounds the sport. I’m a fan of sports, particularly football, so that’s not my issue. My concern is the lack of interest or time given to discussions about Church, God, or religion. It makes me wonder where our faith and beliefs truly stand and whom or what we choose to worship. This is what I will be discussing in this series and hopefully on more to come.
Thank you so much for Visiting, Reading and Commenting. I hope you will join us during this series.

I used to be pretty involved, but I think I have dialed it down quite a bit, mostly because my interests are much different now.
I spend much of my time working my job, and spare time with my study of scripture, and my wood working hobby.

My greatest interest is being a conduit of God’s word, and hopefully reaching some.

Amen 🙏🤗 Same here. If I’m not at my job, I’m home working on my writings, preparing on my next book to get published and then spending time with my wife just before bed time. The only time I watch sports is when the Oregon Ducks college football game is on (usually late Saturday nights ) and on Sunday if I’m lucky enough to catch a Vikings NFL game. I use to watch almost every televised NFL game but not anymore. Like you, I prefer to focus on the Lord and His Word.

Willie,
Thank you for this piece filled with wisdom and truth! Like you, I’m a sports fan. I grew up around sports (Dad a coach!). It’s easy in this world to allow sports and modern dogs indulgences to take priority. I love the energy and excitement in sports~ it would be so amazing if that same enthusiasm could be felt when you step up to the plate for Christ! When I saw Billy Graham crusades or other crusades in packed stadiums, I would get chills! Being a Missouri girl (and a son who just moved away from the KC area), I’m a Chiefs fan (my parents even more) and my oldest son loves them. I love the St. Louis Cardinals. I’ll watch games, but they don’t take me away from what God calls me to do. Admittedly, I sometimes get a bit stubborn due to the amount of I money that is spent ~in every facet~ yet, our world’s priority on entertainment is high. And there are those that do good things with their salaries. I don’t want to sound judgmental, because I’m not~ but I think you understand how I struggle sometimes with it. I ask God to forgive my thoughts! Sports have played a wonderful role in my childhood and in my sons’ lives. But when the game is over, God is the only truth that matters! And that’s why I love your thoughts and words! I’m in the stands cheering for Christ with you! I’ll try and get caught up on the 2nd one when I return home. Many blessings, brother! Keep up the amazing witness for Christ! You are loved! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I completely understand your reflections on balancing sports with our spiritual commitments. It’s a common struggle, and I appreciate your honesty.
This book is meant to inspire, challenge, and provoke thought. It may bless some, change perspectives, or even convict others. My goal is to share the truth as I’ve received it, and how it’s received is between each person and God.
Thank you for your support. I’m glad to have you with me on this journey of faith. Blessings to you, and I look forward to your thoughts on the next part when you’re ready. I posted part 2 earlier today.
Be Blessed and Continue to be a Blessing.
Have Fun and Have a Safe trip back home..
